Judge sides with Enbridge Inc. in Michigan’s latest effort to halt Line 5 pipeline
The international dispute over Line 5 belongs in federal court, a Michigan judge declared Thursday, dealing a critical blow to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s bid to shut down the controversial cross-border pipeline.
It’s the second time in nine months that District Court Judge Janet Neff ruled in favour of pipeline owner Enbridge Inc., which wanted the dispute elevated to the federal level.
Thursday morning, Alberta’s wind fleet was producing just 10 megawatts out of 2,589, 0.4% of capacity
If you just finished your morning coffee in Alberta, your cup of joe was not warmed up by wind power. Well, no more than a couple drops were, as wind was contribution 0.1 per cent of Alberta’s energy load, or 1/1000 of Alberta’s energy load of 10,251 megawatts at that moment.
North American Helium brings former Weil Helium facility at Mankota back on production
North American Helium Inc. (NAH) announced on Aug. 17 it has successfully brought its third helium purification facility on production in May with zero operational issues. This facility is located near the Village of Mankota in southwest Saskatchewan.
That facility was built in and operated by Weil Helium in 2016, but had been dormant for several years. North American has recently drilled wells in the vicinity of the processing plant.
Brian Zinchuk: On Aug. 17 Alberta’s now 28 wind farms combined were putting out less power than Boundary Dam Unit 3 with carbon capture
You would think if they just keep building more wind farms, as both Alberta and now Saskatchewan are doing, they should be spread out enough that if it’s not windy one place, there would be power coming from another.
And you would be wrong.
Sure, that might happen on an average day. But several times this year, as I’ve reported, it’s not windy in all the places Alberta has placed its 28 wind farms. And remember, wind farms are only positioned in places where the wind is expected to blow consistently. It turns out Alberta’s wind is consistently inconsistent.
Alberta adds another 200 megawatt wind farm, yet still gets next to no power from its now 28 wind farms
At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, Alberta’s wind power generation was again contributing a very small percentage of its rated capacity to the Alberta power grid.
According to the Alberta Electric System Operator website, its now-28 wind farms was cumulatively providing less than one third of what one singular coal unit was feeding into the grid.

Enbridge to assume operation of Gray Oak oil pipeline in Texas
Enbridge Inc. says it has completed a deal that will see the Calgary-based pipeline giant become operator of the Gray Oak oil pipeline in Texas.
Enbridge says its joint venture merger deal with Houston-based energy company Phillips 66 will result in a single joint venture holding both companies’ indirect ownership interests in Gray Oak, as well as DCP Midstream LP, a Denver-based natural gas company.

Saskatchewan Matters Podcast: Paul Martin talks about the day a town changed its tune
Here’s a great podcast by Paul Martin about changes in attitude in Saskatchewan. He talks about how AECL considered building nuclear power in Saskatchewan, and how our opinion of ourselves hit a low point. He goes on to explain how that has since change.
“Once we have shed the mantle that government is the answer to all our problems, and the private sector stepped up and realized, ‘No, I make stuff happen,’ the economy has grown dramatically,” Martin said. You want to hear the rest.
Releasing oilsands tailings into river only one solution being considered: Guilbeault
Releasing treated oilsands tailings into the environment isn’t the only solution being considered to clean up the massive toxic ponds in northern Alberta, federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says.
Guilbeault said Wednesday that even though his government is developing regulations on how the tailings could be drained into the Athabasca River, other solutions are under review.
“We’ve never said that this is the only solution we’re contemplating,” he said. “We haven’t ruled out the possibility of finding technical solutions to tailings ponds issues.”

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Norway’s exports reached a record in July, driven mainly by natural gas prices that have soared since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Scandinavian country’s statistics agency on Monday said Norwegian exports reached 229 billion kroner ($24 billion) last month, 0.4% higher than the previous record set in March this year.

New climate deal spurs hopes of more carbon storage projects
GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — The rolling prairie lands of northeastern Wyoming have been a paradise of lush, knee-deep grass for sheep, cattle and pronghorn antelope this summer.
But it’s a different green — greener energy — that geologist Fred McLaughlin seeks as he drills nearly two miles (3.2 kilometers) into the ground, far deeper than the thick coal seams that make this the top coal-mining region in the United States. McLaughlin and his University of Wyoming colleagues are studying whether tiny spaces in rock deep underground can permanently store vast volumes of greenhouse gas emitted by a coal-fired power plant.
Quick Dick McDick: Tuffnell at Ten takes on shutting down coal-fired power here to buy it from US, finance minister and Gov. Gen. travel, handgun ban
At 7:20 Quick Dick picks up on a story and column run by Pipeline Online talking about how SaskPower will be building a powerline to North Dakota to backfill our power supply with coal-fired, carbon-tax-free power while we shut down our own coal-fired power plants.
He decides to beat his head against the wall while everybody figures out why we’re going broke as a country, as a result.

Ian Madsen: Lessening Saskatchewan’s Reliance on Commodity Bonanzas
The Saskatchewan government should take a leaf from resource-dominated states south of the border and proactively enact legislation that compels government agencies to not do business with financial firms or other corporate entities that discriminate against firms engaged in lawful activity in energy, mining, forestry, agriculture and related sectors, under the guise of a pernicious form of green social credit scoring called ‘ESG’: Environmental, Social and Governance standards created by outside, often anti-business and anti-growth interest groups.
Senate climate bill has West Virginia written all over it
The sprawling economic package passed by the U.S. Senate this week has a certain West Virginia flavor.
The package, passed with no Republican votes, could be read largely as an effort to help West Virginia look to the future without turning away entirely from its roots.
The bill contains billions in incentives for clean energy — while also offering renewed support for traditional fuel sources such as coal and natural gas — as well as big boosts for national parks and health care for low-income people and coal miners with black lung disease. That’s no accident. Most provisions were included as the price the Democrats had to pay to win the all-important support of Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who says they will help folks back home.

Canada considered jobs, inflation in decision to return Russian turbine: documents
Global Affairs Canada considered the impact on Canadian jobs and global inflation when making a decision to return a turbine being repaired in Montreal to a Russian energy giant, a newly released document shows.
The “memorandum for action” prepared by Global Affairs recommended Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly grant a permit exempting Siemens Canada from sanctions against Russia and allow it to return the equipment for use in a pipeline carrying gas to Germany.
Brian Zinchuk: SaskPower just signed a massive carbon leakage interchange agreement with the States, and Estevan will suffer the consequences
We have hundreds of years of coal reserves in Saskatchewan. We have the technology to capture the carbon, and sulphur dioxide, if we implement it. We have dramatically reduced other forms of pollution from burning coal. And we can do all these things continually, reliably, and cheaply, wind or no wind, day and night, 24/7/365.
