Trudeau questions business case for natural gas exports from Canada to Europe
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government is open to easing regulatory requirements for projects that would facilitate the export of Canadian natural gas to Europe, but questioned whether a business case exists for such investments.
The comments came Monday during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Montreal as the prime minister hosted the German leader during a visit that will also include stops in Toronto and Newfoundland.

With international eyes on Newfoundland’s hydrogen potential, some remain skeptical
As Germany turns to Canada for energy, all eyes are on a cluster of small western Newfoundland towns that could soon be home to two massive wind-powered hydrogen and ammonia projects.
But there is skepticism among observers. Environmentalists worry the provincial government is moving too fast and trying to capitalize on renewable energy at all costs. Others say they feel uncomfortable with the close ties between the premier of the province and a wealthy businessman backing one of the proposals.
Green Canadian hydrogen not an immediate solution to Germany’s energy worries
Some energy experts warn a deal to sell Canadian hydrogen to Germany will serve as only a small, far-off and expensive part of the solution to Europe’s energy crisis.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are set to sign a hydrogen agreement in Stephenville, N.L. next week, during Scholz’s official visit to Canada.
Canada, Germany to set targets and timelines for hydrogen development and exports
An energy pact between Canada and Germany expected to be signed next week in Newfoundland and Labrador will set aggressive timelines and targets for exporting hydrogen to Germany, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said Friday. While Germany's...

In a statement posted online, Gazprom said that the only operational turbine at a key compressor station along the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which links Western Russia and Germany, will shut down for routine maintenance from August 31 to September 2.
Halabura leaves Royal Helium to focus on Buffalo Potash; update on Buffalo developments
Sometimes, you can only ride one horse at a time. And for Royal Helium’s vice president of exploration as well as CEO of Buffalo Potash, Steve Halabura, the time is to choose that one horse.
On Aug. 17, Royal Helium announced that Halabura was departing, and would be replaced by Shayne Neigum. Neigum is the new chief operating officer and head of exploration for Royal, the second-most active helium explorer in Saskatchewan. On Aug. 16, the company announced it had reached total depth for its first well in the Val Marie area, after having drilled four near Climax and two near Ogema.

Germany lowers natural gas tax to ease burden on consumers
BERLIN (AP) — Germany will temporarily lower taxes on natural gas to ease the pressures on people struggling with soaring energy costs fueled by Russia’s war on Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday.
Climate bill’s unlikely beneficiary: US oil and gas industry
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The U.S. oil industry hit a legal roadblock in January when a judge struck down a $192 million oil and natural gas lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico over future global warming emissions from burning the fuels. It came at a pivotal time for Chevron, Exxon and other industry players: the Biden administration had curtailed opportunities for new offshore drilling, while raising climate change concerns.

Judge sides with Enbridge Inc. in Michigan’s latest effort to halt Line 5 pipeline
The international dispute over Line 5 belongs in federal court, a Michigan judge declared Thursday, dealing a critical blow to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s bid to shut down the controversial cross-border pipeline.
It’s the second time in nine months that District Court Judge Janet Neff ruled in favour of pipeline owner Enbridge Inc., which wanted the dispute elevated to the federal level.
Thursday morning, Alberta’s wind fleet was producing just 10 megawatts out of 2,589, 0.4% of capacity
If you just finished your morning coffee in Alberta, your cup of joe was not warmed up by wind power. Well, no more than a couple drops were, as wind was contribution 0.1 per cent of Alberta’s energy load, or 1/1000 of Alberta’s energy load of 10,251 megawatts at that moment.
North American Helium brings former Weil Helium facility at Mankota back on production
North American Helium Inc. (NAH) announced on Aug. 17 it has successfully brought its third helium purification facility on production in May with zero operational issues. This facility is located near the Village of Mankota in southwest Saskatchewan.
That facility was built in and operated by Weil Helium in 2016, but had been dormant for several years. North American has recently drilled wells in the vicinity of the processing plant.
Brian Zinchuk: On Aug. 17 Alberta’s now 28 wind farms combined were putting out less power than Boundary Dam Unit 3 with carbon capture
You would think if they just keep building more wind farms, as both Alberta and now Saskatchewan are doing, they should be spread out enough that if it’s not windy one place, there would be power coming from another.
And you would be wrong.
Sure, that might happen on an average day. But several times this year, as I’ve reported, it’s not windy in all the places Alberta has placed its 28 wind farms. And remember, wind farms are only positioned in places where the wind is expected to blow consistently. It turns out Alberta’s wind is consistently inconsistent.
Alberta adds another 200 megawatt wind farm, yet still gets next to no power from its now 28 wind farms
At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, Alberta’s wind power generation was again contributing a very small percentage of its rated capacity to the Alberta power grid.
According to the Alberta Electric System Operator website, its now-28 wind farms was cumulatively providing less than one third of what one singular coal unit was feeding into the grid.

Saskatchewan Matters Podcast: Paul Martin talks about the day a town changed its tune
Here’s a great podcast by Paul Martin about changes in attitude in Saskatchewan. He talks about how AECL considered building nuclear power in Saskatchewan, and how our opinion of ourselves hit a low point. He goes on to explain how that has since change.
“Once we have shed the mantle that government is the answer to all our problems, and the private sector stepped up and realized, ‘No, I make stuff happen,’ the economy has grown dramatically,” Martin said. You want to hear the rest.
Releasing oilsands tailings into river only one solution being considered: Guilbeault
Releasing treated oilsands tailings into the environment isn’t the only solution being considered to clean up the massive toxic ponds in northern Alberta, federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says.
Guilbeault said Wednesday that even though his government is developing regulations on how the tailings could be drained into the Athabasca River, other solutions are under review.
“We’ve never said that this is the only solution we’re contemplating,” he said. “We haven’t ruled out the possibility of finding technical solutions to tailings ponds issues.”
