Patchwork Podcast: Energy advocate Deidra Garyk

“We’re seeing it in Europe, I mean, there’s there’s no doubt they are facing it. And those countries have spent trillions of dollars on renewable initiatives, particularly wind and solar, and they’re not performing as expected. They’re not performing as advertised. And I’m not anti renewables, but I am pro-reality. You better get in line in terms of reality. You have to see the world for how it is not how you want it to be,” said Deidra Garyk.

Just three weeks to go until Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show

Just three weeks to go until Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show

LLOYDMINSTER – Just three weeks from now, Lloydminster will be hosting its first heavy oil show since 2018. The event will take place Sept. 14-15, with a banquet on Sept. 13. You see, there was supposed to be a show in 2020, but then a little thing called COVID-19...

Brian Crossman: Meeting the future prime minister of Canada, maybe…

The current administration is, as we say in the oilpatch, “shitting the bed.” And not just for Western Canada, but the whole damn country. (Prove me wrong) It is time for a change. I’m pretty sure ya’ll out here in the energy industry will agree with me on this. So, if the media will show some integrity (not likely) and the voters in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia will give him a chance, maybe we can make Canada just a little bit better.

Another Wednesday, another day Alberta’s wind power puts out 2% of its rated capacity

There must be something about Wednesdays, because another Wednesday resulted in another failure of Alberta’s wind power generation.

At 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Alberta’s power grid was getting just 54 megawatts from its 28 wind farms with a cumulative nameplate capacity of 2,589 megawatts. That’s 2 per cent of its total rated capacity, and less than half the power output of SaskPower’s singular coal unit equipped with carbon capture and storage, Boundary Dam Unit 3. And that level of output remained persistent for at least the next two hours.

Canada has short window to get ahead of U.S. hydrogen efforts, backer warns

The chairman of the company behind one of the biggest proposed green hydrogen projects in Atlantic Canada says a three-year time frame to start shipping the fuel to Germany is feasible if everyone moves quickly.
John Risley is the chair of World Energy G2, a consortium looking for provincial approval to build a wind-powered hydrogen production facility in a port town on the western shore of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Hey, Quebec! You have natural gas that can be exported to Europe, too!

Questerre Energy Corporation responded on Aug 24 to recent comments by the Prime Minister of Canada on the potential for LNG exports from Eastern Canada to Europe. The comments were made during the visit to Canada by the Chancellor of Germany from August 21 to August 23, 2022.

The company has tried for several years to develop natural gas resources in Quebec, with little success. It also has some active operations in southeast Saskatchewan, east of Redvers.

You can thank potash and oil for that $500 cheque you’ll be getting this fall, but the reason is the war in Ukraine

REGINA – Saskatchewan’s finances are markedly improved since the release of the provincial budget this spring – so much so that the deficit has been wiped out, a billion dollars in debt will be retired, and 900,000 Saskatchewan residents ages 18 and over will be mailed $500 cheques this fall, totaling $450 million.

Those were some of the points made by Saskatchewan Finance Minister Donna Harpauer in her first quarter fiscal update, released on Aug. 23 at the Legislature.

Saskatchewan has been the beneficiary of higher commodity prices due to the Russian war in Ukraine. Asked about that, Harpauer said, “We didn’t create the war. And yes, we are benefiting in our commodities. Commodities are benefiting and we’re not the only jurisdiction that that is.”

Royal Helium found high concentrations of lithium in its Climax-1 well

Royal Helium Ltd.  is focused on developing helium in Saskatchewan, and now Alberta, but along the way, it’s found other commodities in its initial exploratory wells.
In addition to recently disclosed gas, Royal announced on Aug. 22 that they have found lithium in their first well – Climax-1.
And that lithium concentration is significant.

Trudeau questions business case for natural gas exports from Canada to Europe

Trudeau questions business case for natural gas exports from Canada to Europe

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government is open to easing regulatory requirements for projects that would facilitate the export of Canadian natural gas to Europe, but questioned whether a business case exists for such investments.
The comments came Monday during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Montreal as the prime minister hosted the German leader during a visit that will also include stops in Toronto and Newfoundland.

David Yager: It is time to revisit resource corridors

David Yager: It is time to revisit resource corridors

Building anything extending beyond the property line of your backyard has become increasingly difficult if not impossible, be it pipelines, power lines, or even roads.
New acronyms emerged. NIMBY, or Not In My Backyard. More obstacles led to BANANA, Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anybody.

With international eyes on Newfoundland’s hydrogen potential, some remain skeptical

With international eyes on Newfoundland’s hydrogen potential, some remain skeptical

As Germany turns to Canada for energy, all eyes are on a cluster of small western Newfoundland towns that could soon be home to two massive wind-powered hydrogen and ammonia projects.

But there is skepticism among observers. Environmentalists worry the provincial government is moving too fast and trying to capitalize on renewable energy at all costs. Others say they feel uncomfortable with the close ties between the premier of the province and a wealthy businessman backing one of the proposals.
