There’s a lot happening in the lithium space in Saskatchewan this summer, and Pipeline Online will be once again digging deep into it. But in the meantime, I came across this video from YouTube science channel Veritasium which explains the why we are developing a lithium industry in the first place. And honestly, I always thought that weight was the most important reason for using lithium – after all, it’s the lightest metal on the periodic table. And that will never change. But while that is still very significant, this video explains it’s the electrons that lithium molecules have that are what’s really important. Who woulda thunk it? Check it out.
Oh yeah, if you have any old, puffy lithium batteries (like from my old GoPros and drones), do NOT puncture them. Really bad idea.
One more thing – pay particular attention towards the end when it mentions using graphite in these batteries – that’s the key reason for the idea to use coal-to-graphite from Estevan area coal. It’s the other end of the battery. And if anything comes of this coal-to-graphite concept, we could feasibly be producing two of the most important components of lithium ion batteries in southeast Saskatchewan.
