TORQUAY – One of the key considerations for the development of Saskatchewan’s nascent lithium industry is how with the product, produced on the Canadian prairie, make it to market? One piece of that puzzle seems to have been solved by Arizona Lithium, which has drilled three production pads in the Torquay area.
On Aug. 4, Australia-based Arizona Lithium said it has “taken a major step forward in the development of its Prairie Lithium Project by signing an MOU with Long Creek Railroad, a local logistics provider operating in southeastern Saskatchewan. The partnership supports a new, purpose-built transload facility—one that will directly connect the project to Canada’s Class 1 rail infrastructure and, ultimately, to global lithium markets.”
Long Creek Rail is a southeast Saskatchewan shortline on a former Canadian Pacific Railbed. It starts in Estevan and goes through Outram, Bromhead, Torquay and terminates at Tribune. Over ten years ago it had a small crude-by-rail operation at Bromhead, but its bread and butter has been frac sand delivery near its Estevan headquarters, grain delivery and rail car storage.
But for Arizona Lithium, that rail line is about three kilometres from its Pad #1, the first lithium product pad that is planned for small-scale commercial production. And Pad #3 is roughly a similar distance from Tribune, the terminus of the line.

Arizona Lithium said, “This strategic alignment is more than a logistical win. It significantly reduces the project’s reliance on trucking across its vast project area and lays the groundwork for rapid, cost-efficient transport of both inputs and final products. The 41-mile LCR line cuts right through the Prairie Project, linking with Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) at Estevan, and offering end-to-end integration with international trade routes.”
Canadian Pacific’s recent merger with Kansas City Railroad dramatically expanded those routes into the central US and Mexico.
Co-location of a battery-grade lithium refinery is under consideration, offering direct rail routes for input reagents and product export, the company said, adding, “Phase 1 production using a commercial-scale DLE unit at Pad #1 has been approved and will produce 150 TPA LCE—with scope for rapid scaling.”
Arizona Lithium executive director Zach Maurer said, “The MOU with Long Creek Railroad is a game-changer for our Prairie Lithium Project. Rail access means we can move our lithium efficiently to major markets across North America and beyond. A co-located lithium refinery along the Long Creek Rail, would benefit from direct rail access for inbound reagents (such as soda ash) and outbound battery grade lithium carbonate.”
