Alberta wind generation falls to 0.3% capacity at supper on Thursday, battery output 0.09% over 30 days

The chant for this weekend’s Telemiracle telethon in Saskatchewan is “Where are we going? Higher!” But when it came to wind power production in Alberta on Feb. 23, then answer to “Where are we going?” was “Lower!”

As the afternoon led into the supper hour, wind power generation had collapsed across the entire province, floating between 11 and 20 megawatts throughout the 5 o’clock hour. This occurred just as the sun was setting over the Rockies, as solar power production had dropped to 34 megawatts out of a nameplate capacity of 1,165 megawatts. As always it happens every night, it would drop to zero.

PTRC to host ISO plenary conference on CO2 storage in oil and gas fields

The PTRC will be hosting the Plenary Conference of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 265 (ISO/TC265) on June 5th to 9th, 2023 in Regina.

The City of Regina is the birthplace of the World’s first CCS Standards (CSA Z741) that were developed by Canadian experts some 12 years ago, by a team that included PTRC’s leadership. Canada is now leading the development of the ISO International Standards.

Oil and gas marks another year of over $1B in R&D spending

Major Canadian oil and gas companies are cranking up spending on research and development aimed at reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.

Suncor Energy, Canadian Natural Resources, Imperial Oil, Syncrude, and TC Energy spent $1.17 billion in 2021 compared to $1.01 billion in 2020, says a recent Research Infosource report. That maintains a world-leading trend since 2012 of major oil and gas companies collectively spending more than $1 billion per year on research and development (R&D).

More LNG projects needed as European demand takes on larger importance: report

The world needs more liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects to meet rising demand as Europe emerges as a key import region, according to the latest industry outlook.

Europe’s LNG imports increased by 60 per cent last year to replace pipeline gas from Russia, Shell reported this week. Analysts expect Europe’s LNG requirements to nearly double by 2030, reaching 140 million tonnes compared to about 73 million tonnes in 2021.

Both units at Cumberland went down for the entirety of the frigid conditions due to frozen implementation lines, he said. Many of the simple cycle and combined cycle gas plants were affected, but most of those were brought back online during the cold, Moul said. Even though TVA was able to put 1,000 megawatts back online after the initial outages, TVA decided to implement rolling blackouts on a second day to keep its power system stable.

Decision on new Suncor CEO expected ‘very soon’

Decision on new Suncor CEO expected ‘very soon’

Suncor Energy Inc. did not announce the name of its new CEO on its fourth-quarter earnings call Wednesday, though interim chief executive Kris Smith said a decision is expected “very soon.”

The Calgary-based oil producer and refiner has been on the hunt for a new CEO ever since former chief executive Mark Little resigned last July, under pressure from an aggressive activist investor and in the wake of a spate of workplace deaths and safety incidents.

Poilievre pledges to “turn dollars for dictators into paychecks for our people right here,” using LNG to supply Asia and Europe

Poilievre pledges to “turn dollars for dictators into paychecks for our people right here,” using LNG to supply Asia and Europe

Poilievre: “When I’m prime minister, I will repeal C-69, the anti-energy law. I’ll clear the way for our mines, our resources and our natural gas export terminals. We will liquefy natural gas in Canada. We will ship it to Asia to shut down dirty coal fired plants and replace them with clean Canadian gas. And we will ship it to Europe, to displace Vladimir Putin and turn dollars for dictators into paychecks for our people right here in this country. Let’s bring it home.”

Decision on new Suncor CEO expected ‘very soon’

Suncor’s fourth-quarter profits increase 76 per cent to $2.74 billion

Suncor Energy Inc. says it earned $2.74 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, a 76 per cent increase from the $1.55 billion it earned in the same three months of 2021.

The Calgary-based company says its increased profit was due to the higher price of crude and refined product realizations as well as higher upstream production, partially offset by increased operating expenses.

Saturn Oil & Gas drilled 57 wells in 2022

Saturn Oil & Gas Inc. announced results from its 2022 capital expenditure program and operational highlights on Feb. 13, most of which was in Saskatchewan.

The 2022 capital program totaled approximately $89.1 million with 80 per cent of expenditures directed to horizontal drilling in Saturn’s two operational areas, the Oxbow Asset in southeast Saskatchewan, and the Viking Asset in west-central Saskatchewan. The balance of capital expenditures was invested in facilities improvements, workover and optimization projects and acquiring land.

TC Energy increases dividend, reports Q4 loss due to rising costs of Coastal GasLink

TC Energy Corp. expects to be able to indicate this summer whether it will complete the Coastal GasLink pipeline by its end-of-year target or not.

The Calgary-based pipeline company, which has been dogged by unexpected construction issues and rising labour costs for the project, said earlier this month that it has raised the estimated cost of the pipeline to $14.5 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $11.2 billion.
