British Columbia announces new energy ‘framework’ on heels of LNG facility approval
The British Columbia government says it’s rolling out a new framework for approving oil and gas projects that will ensure the province meets its emissions targets in the coming decades.
Premier David Eby said Tuesday the framework will require new liquefied natural gas facilities to have a “credible plan” for net-zero emissions by 2030 and there will be an emissions cap on the industry.
Federal and Alberta governments to study oilsands tailings leak communication
The Alberta and federal governments say they will work together to understand what happened around a nine-month delay in notifying the public about toxic seepage from an oilsands tailings pond.
” (Alberta Environment) Minister (Sonya) Savage and (federal Environment) Minister (Steven) Guilbeault reiterated a dual commitment to review information exchange processes and committed to maintaining open communication channels with Indigenous communities in the area with updates on water sampling and other monitoring results,” said a news release Wednesday from the Alberta government.
Oil prices plunge, Canadian energy stocks take beating as global banking fears spread
Crude oil prices plunged below US$70 and Canadian energy stocks took a beating Wednesday as market chaos continued amid concerns about a spreading bank crisis.
“We’re down US$12 in two and a half days, which is obviously a very, very, very large move in crude oil,” said Rory Johnston, a Toronto-based energy analyst and founder of the Commodity Context newsletter.
$3.28-billion Indigenous-led LNG project gets B.C. environmental certificate
The Haisla First Nation on British Columbia’s northern coast has been granted a provincial environmental assessment certificate for a floating liquefied natural gas facility.

The $3.28-billion terminal will be supplied with natural gas from the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which is still under construction.

Canadian industry singing praises of Inflation Reduction Act as federal budget nears
Canadian oil and gas companies are singing from the same songbook in the lead-up to the 2023 federal budget, and its title is the Inflation Reduction Act.
The U.S. legislation, signed into law by U.S. President Joe Biden in August of last year, has been brought up again and again in recent weeks by industry leaders jockeying for support for emissions reductions projects.
Explainer: Alaska’s Willow oil project is controversial. Here’s why.
The Biden administration is approving a major oil project on Alaska’s petroleum-rich North Slope that supporters say represents an economic lifeline for Indigenous communities in the region but environmentalists say is counter to President Joe Biden’s climate goals.
The decision on ConocoPhillips Alaska’s Willow project, in a federal oil reserve roughly the size of Indiana, was revealed Monday.

Biden OKs major Willow oil drilling in Alaska over protests
The Biden administration said Monday it is approving the major Willow oil project on Alaska’s petroleum-rich North Slope, one of President Joe Biden’s most consequential climate choices that is drawing condemnation from environmentalists who say it flies in the face of the Democratic president’s pledges.
The announcement comes a day after the administration, in a big move toward conservation, said it would bar or limit drilling in some other areas of Alaska and the Arctic Ocean.

As Biden weighs Willow, he blocks other Alaska oil drilling
As President Joe Biden prepares a final decision on the huge Willow oil project in Alaska, his administration announced he will prevent or limit oil drilling in 16 million acres in Alaska and the Arctic Ocean.
Plans announced Sunday night will bar drilling in nearly 3 million acres of the Beaufort Sea — closing it off from oil exploration — and limit drilling in more than 13 million acres in a vast swath of land known as the National Petroleum Reserve – Alaska.
What do you get when you divide 41 by 10,000? The fraction of Alberta’s wind power generation capacity put out on Saturday, March 11
The province’s two remaining coal units were putting out 100.5 per cent of their capacity, putting out 824 megawatts with a remaining installed based of 820. That means those two units were putting out 54.9 times the output of the entire fleet of 36 wind farms in Alberta, with hundreds of turbines between them.
Weekend Watch: Why do People Think Oil Comes From Dinosaurs
The YouTube Chanel Today I Found Out posted an interesting video last week regarding how oil is created. It’s a pretty decent explanation without going too nerdy.

A global mystery: What’s known about Nord Stream explosions
It’s a major international mystery with global consequences: Who was behind the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines last year in the Baltic Sea?
The answer has broad implications for European energy security but could also threaten Western unity over backing Ukraine in defending itself from Russia’s invasion. Or, it might shatter Russian and Chinese attempts to fix the blame on a hypocritical West.

Brian Crossman: Three hundred and sixty-four days. The last year in helping Ukrainian refugees come to Saskatchewan
We have been to the airport in the dead of night, and having total strangers trusting you to take them, and their most precious of cargo, their children, on a two hour ride to Estevan. That alone is a leap of faith. But they are not strangers for long. We have witnessed big smiles, lots of tears, and the incredible resilience of adults and children as they settle in to their new surroundings to not only survive, but thrive.
Brian Zinchuk: How many nuclear reactors, wind turbines, or solar panels would Saskatchewan have needed last week? How about on Feb. 23?
To completely replace existing coal and natural gas power generation with enough wind generation capacity to account for days like Feb. 23, 2023, you would need to build 44,933 wind turbines covering 18.7 per cent of Saskatchewan south of the treeline.
