At supper on Friday, Alberta’s wind power fell to 7 out of 3,618 megawatts, or 0.19 per cent capacity. Again
The problem is not when you have four tires filled with air on your vehicle, it’s when you have a flat tire. And that was Alberta’s power grid at 6:51 p.m. on Friday, as wind power generation fell to 7 megawatts out of a possible 3,618 megawatts.
And if you’re counting flats, out of the 36 wind farms in Alberta, at that moment, 32 were producing precisely zero power.

Moe concerned feds’ ‘social cost of carbon’ could lead to much higher carbon tax, pave way for Clean Electricity Standard impossible for SK to meet
All of this has Moe concerned not only about Guilbeault floating a trial balloon about a possible higher carbon tax, but how this “social cost of carbon” could be used by the federal government as justification for its proposed Clean Electricity Standard. If implemented in its current form, that standard would mean the end of natural gas and coal power production, except in exceptional circumstances, by 2035. There have been numerous days this past winter where up to 86 per cent of Saskatchewan’s power generation came from natural gas and coal combined.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault announces “social cost of carbon.” Could this mean a $247/tonne carbon tax?
On Wednesday, April 19, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change announced a new “social cost of carbon.” In this video post on Twitter, he referenced a newly evaluated “social cost” of $247 per tonne of CO2. He noted that previously the cost of “carbon pollution” had been evaluated at $54 per tonne CO2e, which closely correlated with the original carbon tax level, as it was first announced.
Cost of carbon emissions nearly five times higher than previously thought: analysis
The economic cost of greenhouse gas emissions is nearly five times higher than previously thought, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said Wednesday.
The minister told attendees at a climate change conference in Ottawa that the government used updated scientific knowledge and economic models to revise the way it evaluates how much climate change is costing Canadians.
Former consultant to wind industry warns of turbines’ toll on migrant birds in Nova Scotia
Environmental researcher John Kearney says the whirring blades of a proposed 13-turbine wind farm in Nova Scotia may cut greenhouse gases, but the risks they pose to migrating birds are too high.

CEO Murray Mullen said his company has been operating CNG trucks in Alberta for more than 18 months. He said while the natural gas-powered engines are about 30 per cent more expensive than a traditional diesel engine, the CNG itself is cheaper than retail diesel fuel.
US ready to lend Poland $4 billion for nuclear energy plan
Editor’s note: the GE Hitachi BWRX-300 is the same small modular reactor that SaskPower has chosen to build here, starting in the 2030s. Poland is planning to build many times the 4 reactors Saskatchewan is considering.
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A project to develop small nuclear power reactors in Poland is moving forward, with Polish energy company Orlen and two U.S. government financial institutions signing an agreement Monday.
Trudeau: “The conversation about getting the federal government to take back control those resources is a non-starter. It’s not going to happen”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will not move to take away provincial control of natural resources.
The issue of First Nations vs provincial control of natural resources came up at a town hall held at First Nations University in Regina held on April 13. It was a continuation of the dustup between the provincial governments of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba and federal minister of Justice and Attorney General David Lametti.
Quick Dick McDick: 2 Stroke Smoke
Everyone gets a sore shoulder, starting up those old two stroke vintage sleds at Foam Lake. I grew up with a Ski-doo Elan, but I doubt anyone was racing one of those.

Jim Warren, Part 2: Big Green’s big vulnerabilities
The first column in this series described the masterfully executed campaign waged by environmental organizations in opposition to Alberta’s oil sands. In this column we’ll see that environmental organizations, despite the considerable resources they command and past success, are not omnipotent. ENGOs have baked-in vulnerabilities that can be successfully exploited provided their opponents do the requisite opposition research.
No date for coal phase out as G7 environment ministers wrap meeting in Japan
By Laura Osman in Ottawa Environment and energy ministers from G7 countries wrapped two days of talks in northern Japan on Sunday without acting on Canada's push to set a timeline for phasing out coal-fired power plants. In their 36-page communique after the...
A day after Alberta’s wind generation cratered, so, too, did Saskatchewan’s. Again.
According to SaskPower’s Where Your Power Comes From webpage, wind power generation in Saskatchewan averaged 31 megawatts on Friday, April 14. As it’s a daily average, that means at times wind generation was below 31 megawatts.
G7 energy, environment leaders haggle over climate strategy
SAPPORO, Japan (AP) — Energy and environment ministers of the Group of Seven wealthy nations met Saturday in northern Japan, seeking to reconcile the world’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels with the urgency of ending carbon emissions to stave off the worst consequences of climate change.
The meetings in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo are aimed at forging a consensus on the best way forward, ahead of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima in May.
Powering down: Germany’s last nuclear plants in final hours
BERLIN (AP) — Germany began winding down its three remaining nuclear power plants Saturday as part of a long-planned transition toward renewable energy, drawing cheers from environmentalists who campaigned for the move.
The shutdown of the reactors Emsland, Neckarwestheim II and Isar II, agreed to more than a decade ago, was being closely watched abroad.
