CCUS workshop

PTRC spokesperson Norm Sacuta said, “A big theme of it is going to be CCUS,” referring to carbon capture, utilization and storage. That happens to be one of the PTRC’s core specialties, as it backed the scientific research in the implementation of the Weyburn-Midale projects.

The day following the main conference will see a CCUS workshop held on May 4 at the PTRC’s office at the Innovation Place research park, University of Regina campus. This involves a separate registration of $650. Information can be found here.

This conference comes at a time when interest is gathering steam.

CCUS stands for carbon capture, utilization and storage, and after literal decades of being implemented in Saskatchewan via the Weyburn and Midale Units, as well as Aquistore, the rest of the world is waking up to its promise. In Alberta, there are now numerous CCUS hubs in the works, the granddaddy of which is the Pathways Alliance which will bring CO2 from the largest oilsands producers to Cold Lake for geological storage. In Saskatchewan, Whitecap Resources is working with several Regina and Moose Jaw-area industrial operations, including Federated Cooperatives Ltd.’s refinery and ethanol facility, with the intention of pipelining it to the Weyburn Unit.

Thus, it’s time for Saskatchewan to share some of its experience, which is deep, both figuratively and literally. Thus, the Saskatchewan CCUS summit.

Topics for it include Introduction:

  • Global State of CCUS
  • Capture Technologies: An overview
  • CCUS Economics
  • CCUS Regulations, standards and tax incentives
  • Risk Management
  • Storage Site Screening, Selection and Characterization
  • Wells (Injection and Observation)
  • Measurement, Monitoring and Verification of Stored CO2
  • CO2 EOR
