Cenovus CEO: Without cheap, abundant, affordable energy, life is brutal. Life is short
“I’m really optimistic about this is oil and gas industry really, for two reasons. One is, I think Premier Moe mentioned this, is that without cheap, abundant, affordable energy, life is brutal. Life is short. You know, there’s one thing that First World nations all have in common: they have cheap, reliable, abundant energy. And today, hydrocarbons make up just over 80 per cent of that energy mix.” – Cenovus’s new CEO Jon McKenzie.

Brian Crossman: Taking a break to add some perspective on health care
I’m gonna take a little detour today to discuss the health care in Saskatchewan. Why would I do this you might ask? While I am not a fan about writing about my personal life, in order to get to the point I have to.
Quick Dick McDick: Toonie: Guilbeault, GET BENT
“Today, we’re talking about Steven Guilbeault, and his absolutely ridiculous environmental policies,” Quick Dick McDick opens with. Sounds like a pretty good start.

Brian Zinchuk: Saskatchewan’s “Keep the Lights On” legislative session comes to an end
The 2022-23 Saskatchewan legislative session could rightly be called the “Keep the lights on” session. That’s because the very first bill brought up was the Saskatchewan First Act, whose stated purpose was to re-assert provincial control over power generation (and its...

Will Biden’s hard-hat environmentalism bridge the divide on clean energy future?
When John Podesta left his job as an adviser to President Barack Obama nearly a decade ago, he was confident that hundreds of miles of new power transmission lines were coming to the Southwest, expanding the reach of clean energy throughout the region.
On Thursday and again on Saturday, Alberta’s wind power generation fell below 1%
As Saskatchewan’s government spent the last week dealing with how it will keep its lights on in the future, the reliability, or lack thereof, of wind in Alberta was reinforced.
Scott Moe comes to Estevan to discuss its power generation future
Most of this past week, Premier Scott Moe has focused on the future of power generation in Saskatchewan. It started with a press conference in Regina on Tuesday, a debate in the Legislature on Wednesday, more comments on Thursday and finally a meeting with Estevan and area elected officials, coal miners and electrical workers. This is the final press conference of the week, in Estevan city council chambers, where he was asked about more specific local implications on the future of power generation in the Energy City.

Moe speaks to Estevan leaders about power generation future: reaction from mayor
There’s been a tremendous amount of uncertainty in Estevan, home of coal mines feeding two coal-fired power plants.
Burn coal for power past 2030, it’s a crime, says Guilbeault. Come get me, replies Moe
Federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault responded on Wednesday to Saskatchewan’s electricity emissions plan by saying burning coal would be a crime. In that case, Premier Scott Moe said, “Come get me.”
NDP would build more renewable power, but need all the above
Saskatchewan’s New Democratic Party may have voted unanimously with the Saskatchewan Party on supporting its plan to continue using fossil fuels for power generation, phasing them out much more slowly than the federal government is calling for.
But that doesn’t mean they’re in agreement on much of how we get there. They would build more renewable power generation, but also back nuclear power.
Without committing to nuclear, Saskatchewan is pretty much committing to nuclear
When Saskatchewan finally runs its coal and natural gas power plants to end of life, to what power generation will Saskatchewan turn?
The answer, spread throughout the press conference, was nuclear.
Asking Moe: What if the feds order power plants be shut down, and the Supreme Court backs them?
Pipeline Online asks Premier Scott Moe, “What happens if the federal government says no dice, you must shut down those power plants by 2035? And Supreme Court backs it? What do we do then?

Saskatchewan running coal power later than 2030 would be illegal: Guilbeault
It would be against the law for Saskatchewan to run its coal-fired power plants after 2030 unless the greenhouse-gas emissions from those plants are captured, federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said Wednesday.
Saskatchewan will not meet Net Zero by 2035, but will aim for 2050
Here’s a lot more depth on what was said during Tuesday’s press conference about SaskPower and Saskatchewan’s electrical generating future, and there are additional stories to come as well.
Saskatchewan can’t meet Net Zero by 2035, so we won’t: full press conference video
There’s a lot to unpack here, from plans to continue coal use until 2044, to substantial adoption of nuclear power in the future. We’re still going to build wind and solar, but there’s acknowledgement they can be totally unreliable, and natural gas backup for them is needed.

Biden plan would open leases to conservation, not just drilling and grazing
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The Biden administration wants to put conserving vast government-owned lands on equal footing with oil drilling, livestock grazing and other interests, according to a top administration official who defended the idea against criticism that it could sideline industry.

Alberta’s wind power drops to 2 megawatts out of 3618 on Friday, the lowest level we’ve seen yet
For three of four days last week, Alberta saw its wind power generation utterly collapse.
On Friday, May 12, Alberta’s wind generation fell to the lowest number Pipeline Online has seen in 17 months of following the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO). At 7:25 a.m., Alberta’s wind generation fell to 2 megawatts, out of a nameplate capacity of 3,618 megawatts installed, between hundreds of wind turbines across 36 wind farms, collectively costing billions of dollars.
Kerry challenges oil industry to prove its promised tech rescue for climate-wrecking emissions
WASHINGTON (AP) — Oil and gas producers talk up technological breakthroughs they say will soon allow the world to drill and burn fossil fuels without worsening global warming. U.S. climate envoy John Kerry says the time is here for the industry to prove it can make the technology happen — at scale, affordably and quickly — to stave off climate disaster.
