Rule allowing rail shipments of LNG will be put on hold to allow more study of safety concerns
A Trump-era rule allowing railroads to haul highly flammable liquefied natural gas will now be formally put on hold to allow more time to study the safety concerns related to transporting that fuel and other substances like hydrogen that must be kept at extremely low temperatures when they are shipped, regulators announced Thursday.
Feds fork over $30 million for 1,500 EV chargers in Quebec

Dustin Duncan moved to Crown Investments in cabinet shuffle, Reiter and Eyre stay put
The mid-summer cabinet shuffle has become something of a tradition with the Saskatchewan Party government, and there were substantial changes in many of the key ministries, including Crown Investments Corporation; Health; Environment; Highways Corrections, Policing and Public Safety. But among the unchanged are two of the portfolios dealing with the “energy transition” and energy – Jim Reiter as minister of Energy and Resources, and Bronwyn Eyre as Minister of Justice and Attorney General.
Alberta and Texas continue to struggle keeping the lights on; Alberta issues second electrical grid alert in two days
Two of the most energy-rich jurisdictions on the planet, Alberta and Texas, struggled to keep the lights on Tuesday evening. The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) declared its second “grid alert” in two days on Tuesday evening, as did the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). ERCOT issued its previous alert on Sunday.
With brownouts a possibility, Texas issues another grid alert on Tuesday, its second in three days
Both Texas and Alberta have been leaders in their respective nations in the implementation of large amounts of wind and solar power generation and the abandonment of coal-fired power generation for the sake of the “energy transition” and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. And both, in recent days, have been issuing grid alerts when the temperatures are hot, wind power falters, and the sun starts to go down.
Suncor’s revised focus on oil production proof of need for emissions cap: Guilbeault

Don’t use that dishwasher! Alberta under another “grid alert” as wind bottoms out, again, on Monday
Like Texas the day before, at 3:08 p.m., the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) issued a “grid alert,” warning Albertans to reduce their power consumption lest the lights go out.

Energy Transition Podcast, Episode 78: BRICS adds six new members
On Aug. 28, Armando Cavanha, Tammy Nemeth, Irina Slav and David Blackmon discussed the implications of the expansion of BRICS for world energy issues. With the expanded membership, they will account for 46 per cent of world population and 43 per cent of oil production. Could this new group challenge the global dominance of the G7, of which Canada is a part? David Blackmon thinks this is one of the most significant geopolitical developments of this century.

Canadian banks face squeeze between climate expectations, market pressures
In May, Canadian banks offered support to those affected by an early wave of wildfires in Alberta. In June, they extended the offer to those hit in Nova Scotia, and some expanded it further as fires also raged in Quebec and Ontario.
Texas electrical grid issues “conservation appeal” on Sunday, as wind and solar falter
As thermal power generation, especially coal, has fallen out of favour, it has been scaled back in Texas while the state has seen a tremendous build out of wind and solar. This is very similar to what has been happening in Alberta, and a path Saskatchewan has started to follow. However, as in Alberta, on days the wind does not blow, the grid has become increasingly in peril, as has occurred in Texas on Aug. 27. Alberta issued five “grid alerts” of a similar nature over a three week period last November-December, each time when wind power generation had flatlined.
Poplar River’s second unit up and running again, as natural gas and coal contribute 87% of total power production
Saskatchewan’s power grid has largely returned to normal operations, after a difficult summer without one of its principal coal-fired power stations.
SaskPower told Pipeline Online on 24 the Poplar River Power Station Unit 1 is now back up, meaning the plant is at full capacity again. A week earlier, Unit 2 returned to service.

Saskatchewan funds nuclear specialist for supply chain development of small modular reactors via SIMSA
SASKATOON – As the federal government’s recently released draft Clean Electricity Regulations make coal-fired power, even with carbon capture, all but impossible, and will require almost perfect carbon capture on natural gas-fired power generation. As a result, Saskatchewan’s increasing focus on nuclear power generation is coming to the fore. And to that end, money is starting to be dedicated to that purpose.
Nemeth Report Podcast: ESG on steroid? ISSB standards are coming to Canada
The topic of this episode is the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the newly released IFRS S1-sustainability and IFRS S2-climate-related financial disclosure standards that Canada is determined to implement. Canada has created a Canadian Sustainability Standards Board to work in lockstep with the ISSB and is currently reviewing the standards for implementation. Some have called these sustainability standards ESG on steroids. Dr. Tammy Nemeth’s guest is Deidra Garyk, energy advocate, contributor to Energy Now, and Manager, ESG and Sustainability at energy services company Trican.
Crescent Point is getting out of the North Dakota Bakken with $675 million sale
Crescent Point Energy Corp. is selling off its North Dakota assets to a private operator for US$500 million (approximately C$675 million) in cash. It’s a move that follows Crescent Point’s growing focus on Alberta production in the Duvernay play, where they have been seeing some stellar wells in the range of 1,500 barrels per day initial production.
But as their focus in Alberta has grown considerably, action to the east has declined.
