OPEC+ oil boost likely not much help to high gasoline prices
NEW YORK (AP) — The OPEC oil cartel and allied producing nations decided Thursday to boost production of crude by an amount that will likely do little to relieve high gasoline prices at the pump and energy-fueled inflation plaguing the global economy.
The increase of 648,000 barrels per day in August leaves the world thirsty for oil as it rebounds from the COVID-19 pandemic and runs up against the inability of the 23-member OPEC+ alliance to meet its production quotas.
OPEC+, which includes Russia, confirmed the decision from its last meeting. Before that, it had been adding about 432,000 barrels per day monthly to put oil back on the market after cutting production dramatically during the height of the pandemic.
New clean fuel regulations to raise gas prices, affect low-income Canadians the most

Jim Warren: When it comes to nations around the world following climate change commitments, how has free trade worked out thus far? Expect the same
Our experience with globalization over the past few decades offers a preview of what we can expect regarding international cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Remember when global free trade was all the rage back in the 1990s and early 2000s? Prairie people working in agriculture and the energy business recognized that if globalized free trade worked as advertised, it would indeed be good economic news for our export-reliant livelihoods.

Clean fuel standards allow companies to get both tax credits and sell carbon credits
By Mia Rabson in Ottawa Canada's new emissions standards for gasoline and diesel will allow oil companies that get a federal tax break for installing carbon capture and storage systems to also generate credits based on those systems, which they can then sell to...

G-7 leaders pledge work on climate change
Leaders from the Group of Seven major economies and five key developing nations pledged Monday to work together to curb climate change while ensuring energy security for their citizens. In a joint statement released by Germany, which chairs the G-7 this year, the leaders emphasized the need to accelerate a “clean and just energy transition” that would see an end to the burning of fossil fuels without causing a sharp rise in unemployment.
CO2 was supposed to extend the life of the Weyburn Unit by 25 years. That was 25 years ago, and it’s still going strong
On June 26, 1997, politicians and corporate executives gathered in Weyburn to announce a project that was supposed to extend the life of the prolific but declining Weyburn Unit by another 25 years. That was 25 years ago, and the Weyburn Unit is still going strong. Indeed, it is a critical component for future plans for carbon capture, utilization and storage for this province, with a major expansion in the works.

‘Over the top hypocrisy’ of F1 oilsands protest helps Alberta’s case, Kenney argues
The “over-the-top hypocrisy” outspoken Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel displayed on his T-shirt and helmet last weekend in Montreal is just the sort of thing Premier Jason Kenney says he needs to disprove and discredit the critics of Alberta’s oilsands.
Kenney visibly relished the chance Thursday to denounce Vettel as a hypocrite after the German driver showed up at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the F1 Canadian Grand Prix in a T-shirt that described the oilsands as “Canada’s Climate Crime.”
