Gas prices in Vancouver hit a new high of more than $2.39 a litre at some stations Thursday, blowing past the previous peak set this summer.
One gas analyst said that’s a new all-time record for North America, and expects prices to continue to rise this week.

Europe ramps up energy security after suspected sabotage
BRUSSELS (AP) — European companies are ramping up security around pipelines and energy prices are climbing again as the suspected sabotage of two pipelines that deliver natural gas from Russia underscored the vulnerability of Europe’s energy infrastructure and prompted the EU to warn of possible retaliation.
Some European officials and energy experts have said Russia is likely to blame for any sabotage — it directly benefits from higher energy prices and economic anxiety across Europe — although others cautioned against pointing fingers until investigators are able to determine what happened.
Enbridge sells minority stake in seven pipelines to Indigenous communities
Enbridge Inc. has signed a deal to sell a minority stake in seven pipelines in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta to a group of 23 First Nation and Métis communities for $1.12 billion.
Alberta premier Jason Kenney called the purchase a “historic, game-changing deal” at a press conference Wednesday with multiple stakeholders present, including Enbridge executives and members of some of the communities involved in the purchase.
“This is a big deal,” he said. “This is the single largest Indigenous transaction in the natural resource sector in the history of North America.”

Brian Zinchuk: Nuclear power is Estevan’s to lose, if Saskatchewan goes ahead with small modular reactors
On Sept. 20, SaskPower announced they were considering two areas as possible sites for Saskatchewan’s first two nuclear reactors. One is at Lake Diefenbaker, near Elbow, and the other is Estevan, with three nearby reservoirs under consideration.
When it comes to choosing between Estevan and Elbow for future nuclear power development, Estevan would have to try really hard to lose.
Really, really hard.
NDP SaskPower critic Aleana Young says small modular reactors can play a role in our energy future
REGINA – NDP MLA Aleana Young’s prior job, before becoming a gourmet cheese store owner and Regina University MLA, was working with the Petroleum Technology Research Centre. She focused specifically on the Aquistore project. Aquistore takes carbon dioxide captured by the Boundary Dam Unit 3 Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Project and pumps it underground over three kilometres deep, two kilometres west of the power plant.
Germany: Pressure drops in 2nd Russian gas pipeline
BERLIN (AP) — The Nord Stream 1 pipeline leading from Russia to Europe has reported a drop in pressure, only hours after a leak was reported in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea off Denmark, the German economy ministry said.
Denmark reports leak in gas pipeline in Baltic Sea
BERLIN (AP) — Denmark’s maritime authority said Monday that a gas leak had been observed in a pipeline leading from Russia to Europe underneath the Baltic Sea and that there is a danger to ship traffic.
The operator of Nord Stream 2 confirmed that a leak in the pipeline had been detected southeast of the Danish island Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
Coal mining dragline in peril after partial wall collapse below it

One of the leading advocates for clean coal in Estevan says the community should turn to nuclear, now that SaskPower may not do more carbon capture
ESTEVAN – Jim Wilson was heavily involved in trying to make “clean coal” happen in Estevan. And in 2008, the federal government under Conservative Stephen Harper announced $240 million for what would ultimately become the Boundary Dam Unit 3 Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Project. In 2014, it finally went online. But now, eight years later, no further coal units have had carbon capture installed, and according to the Crown Investments Corporation and SaskPower Minister SaskPower Don Morgan on Sept. 20, the federal Liberal government will not allow any more.
When it comes to shutting down coal in Saskatchewan, they need to just stand up and say, ‘No,’ says RM of Estevan Reeve Jason LeBlanc
ESTEVAN – Back in 2019, before he became reeve of the Rural Municipality of Estevan No. 5, Jason LeBlanc was standing in deep snow on Parliament Hill, protesting the carbon tax imposed by the Liberal federal government. And now the largest industry in his RM will likely be largely shut down by the end of this decade, due to that government’s policies against coal-fired power.
On Sept. 20, SaskPower announced it was looking at two areas – Elbow and Estevan – as possible sites for nuclear power development. But at that press conference, Pipeline Online asked Crown Investments Corporation (and SaskPower) Minister Don Morgan if it wouldn’t be cheaper and quicker to just implement carbon capture on SaskPower’s coal facilities, or to rebuild with new ones. He said federal regulations wouldn’t allow that.
PSAC rebrands as “Enserva,” dumping “Petroleum” as part of its name
CALGARY – In the last year, the CAODC became the CAOEC. On Sept. 23, PSAC, the Petroleum Services Association of Canada, rebranded itself as Enserva. It’s continuing a trend of ditching terms like “petroleum” or “oilwell” in branding, in favour of “energy.”
In a press release on that day, PSAC said, “Canada’s energy industry is transforming, and so is Enserva – today, our association is proud to officially announce our rebrand from our previous identity as the Petroleum Services Association of Canada to our new moniker, Enserva. This exciting rebrand better reflects who our Association is and where we are going.”

David Yager: Visit rural Alberta and learn first-hand where the necessities of life come from
But when I looked at the faces of the 500 people at the oil show banquet, I was struck by the thought that right now, Lloydminster may be the best place to live in the world.
Food and fuel in limitless supply. Good jobs for everyone who wants to work. Affordable housing. Opportunity. Recreational facilities. Schools. A hospital shared by Alberta and Saskatchewan.
And the crowd was universally happy, at least that night. After pandemic lockdowns and years of tough times, their oil show was back for the first time in four years. It was a proud and important symbol of a community and industry that was finally and firmly back on its feet.
Estevan mayor on coal: “The closer we get without any good answers by 2030, the harder it is for everyone in our community. We deserve some answers”
ESTEVAN – Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig, upon hearing that further carbon capture projects on local coal-fired power plants was “not an option,” according to Crown Investments Corp. Minister Don Morgan, wants to know what the federal government is going to do to help his community. They’re not even responding to emails, he said.

Canada’s environment minister does not jump to take up UN call for windfall taxes
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault isn’t warming to the idea of combating climate change by imposing a windfall tax on the massive profits being posted by some Canadian oil and gas producers.
During the annual UN General Assembly in New York City this week, Secretary-General António Guterres said fossil fuel companies are making massive profits and should be taxed extra to pay for climate action and deliver help to people struggling with their energy and food bills.

SaskPower narrows nuclear power siting for small modular reactors to Estevan or Elbow areas
REGINA – SaskPower is looking at two areas for possible future nuclear development – Estevan and Elbow. And really, that’s more like four areas, because the Estevan area being considered includes Boundary Dam Reservoir, Rafferty Reservoir, and Alameda Reservoir,...
AIMCo CEO rejects fossil fuel divestment as investment strategy
The CEO of Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo) says divesting from fossil fuels is the opposite of what pension funds should be doing if they want to help solve the climate crisis.
Evan Siddall — head of what is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors, with $168.3 billion of assets under management as of the end of last year — said in an interview that AIMCo wants to be a leader in financing the transition to a low-carbon economy, but it won’t do that by divesting from fossil fuels as some global pension funds have done.
Further carbon capture on coal “not an option,” according to CIC Minister Don Morgan
REGINA – Since the opening of the Boundary Dam Unit 3 Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Project in late 2014, Saskatchewan’s coal-fired power industry, and Estevan in particular, has been waiting for a clear message from the provincial government whether it would pursue additional carbon capture projects. To date, nothing has come forward, but the minister responsible indicated on Sept. 20 it would not happen.
