Oil giants rake in steep profits amid high energy prices
By Cathy Bussewitz Oil companies brought in staggering profits once again as people worldwide struggled with high gasoline and energy prices. Exxon Mobil broke records with its profits in the third quarter, raking in $19.66 billion in net income....
Imperial ‘striking a balance’ between shareholder returns and capital spending: CEO
Imperial Oil Ltd. announced Friday that it is raising its quarterly dividend by nearly 30 per cent and also plans to buy back up to $1.5 billion worth of shares — further evidence that shareholders of Canadian oil and gas stocks are reaping the benefits of 2022’s global energy crisis.
Guilbeault slams oilpatch for raking in cash and sitting idle on climate action
OTTAWA — The federal environment minister is calling out Canada’s oil companies for failing to put cash behind their promises to tackle climate change.
Steven Guilbeault says the country’s major oil players have promised to do something about greenhouse gas emissions, but instead have funnelled most of their record-breaking profits to shareholders.
This is at least the third time in the last six months Guilbeault’s frustration has spilled over as oil company profits soar. This time his critiques came in the form of a video posted to Twitter as major petroleum producers began releasing their third-quarter earnings.
Deborah Jaremko: A Matter of Fact: European Parliament is wrong to endorse ‘fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty’
The European Parliament is endorsing a dangerous and misguided “fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty” that would cause harm to people around the world.
The political forum is recommending that European Union member states phase out fossil fuels as soon as possible and stop all new investments in fossil fuel extraction.
The implication of the “treaty” is that ongoing use of oil and gas is an imminent threat to human society as bad as the atomic bomb.
That is wrong.
Brian Zinchuk: Schlumberger changes its name to SLB, part of the Get Woke, Go Broke movement
“Net zero.” “Decarbonize.” Changing their names to meaningless letters. Why do these terms and actions, from these utter behemoths of the oil industry, bring to mind the phrase, “Get woke, go broke?”

Ottawa waiting on draft proposals from provinces for $250-million home heating fund
HALIFAX – Environment and Climate Change Canada says it’s still waiting for draft proposals from most provinces on administering a $250-million home heating assistance program announced six weeks ago.
The four-year program that includes about $120 million for Atlantic Canada was announced by the federal department on Sept. 15.
Precision Drilling returns to profitability as oil and gas sector picks up pace
Increased activity in the North American oil and gas sector helped Calgary-based Precision Drilling Corp. return to profitability during the third quarter of 2022, even as the drilling and service sector as a whole struggles with ongoing labour shortages.
Precision — the largest drilling rig contractor in the country — reported a third-quarter profit of $30.7 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of $38 million a year ago, as its revenue gained 69 per cent.
The rise, and perhaps fall, of fracking in southeast Saskatchewan? Crescent Point starts drilling Viewfield Bakken wells without fracking them
CALGARY – If you were to ask someone what two technologies resulted in Saskatchewan’s “Bakken Boom,” the answers would surely be horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracking. Occasionally more legs, but especially more frac stages, were key.
It now appears that Crescent Point Energy Corp., which, through dozens of acquisitions, consolidated most of the Viewfield Bakken, is experimenting with moving away from fracking in that play.
Suncor to acquire Teck Resources’ stake in Fort Hills oilsands project for $1B
CALGARY — Suncor Energy Inc. will buy out Teck Resources Ltd.’s 21.3 per cent stake in the Fort Hills oilsands project for approximately $1 billion, the two companies announced late Wednesday.
Crescent Point Energy reports Q3 profit up from year ago, announces special dividend
Crescent Point Energy Corp. announced a special dividend for shareholders Wednesday, as continued high oil prices helped the Calgary-based oil and gas company deliver a five-fold increase in profits in its third quarter.

Oct. 23 was one of those days.

Quick Dick McDick: How to smoke a meatloaf. And no, not the singer kind
In this spell-binding episode, Quick Dick McDick’s been snowed out, so he takes to the kitchen and smoker to make two flavours of meatloaf, made with Saskatchewan beef.
“Maybe your meatloaf wants to identify as an octagon? Find a container. Make it happen. Let your meatloaf be who it wants to be,” said Quick Dick.
Brian Crossman: The Future (Hint: it’s Saskatchewan)
The future is a pretty big place. Huge. Ginormous. (Is that a word?) So where does the energy industry fit in? How are we to adapt to a future that seems to be without a standard of living that we are used to? A future they tell us is supposedly without fossil fuels, coal, natural gas, gasoline, diesel and kerosene. (Those passenger planes love that kerosene to stay in the air) When I stop in at the local coffee shop (The Beefeater in Estevan to be precise) to solve all the world’s problems, these are topics that remain front and center. For obvious reasons, the energy industry is always in the mix, along with tax dollars (Mismanagement of said dollars) poor political decisions, coal vs nuclear, how the Estevan Bruins are doing, and that three-legged cat Mike seen on Third Street last week. There are plenty of issues to discuss and problems to solve. (“Who is going to stop Putin?” is popular, too.)

David Yager: Alberta petroleum, politics and prosperity – an historical perspective
The political success of Alberta premiers dating back 50 years has been closely linked to the oil and gas business and federal/provincial relations.
Premiers fortunate enough to be in office when the oilpatch and economy were booming were popular and won multiple elections. Challenging the federal government when its policies negatively affect Alberta has been a reliable vote-getter, especially when it involves resources.
Those who were in office when Alberta’s main industry was struggling, or were seen as cooperating with Ottawa when its policies negatively affected oil and gas, have not been treated as kindly.

Environmental groups call on feds to not ‘water down’ oil and gas emissions cap
As environmental groups urge the federal government to move quickly with an aggressive cap on emissions from the country’s oil and gas sector, the industry itself says such a move could actually slow down the sector’s own decarbonization efforts.
With world leaders preparing to head to Egypt next month for the 27th United Nations climate conference, environmentalists say now is the time for the Trudeau government to announce the specific targets it plans to impose on the oil and gas sector in order to ensure Canada meets its climate commitments.
