“Our solar capacity is 20 and we were getting 2. You cannot run a province, you cannot run business, you cannot run industry, you cannot run people’s homes on that unreliability”
REGINA – Two MLAs touched on wind and solar development in Saskatchewan in their throne speeches this past week. David Buckingham talked about new projects, while Travis Keisig spoke about the realties of just how much power comes from those renewable projects. Both are from the Saskatchewan Party. NDP members did not bring up solar or wind in their throne speeches.
Cenovus CEO takes aim at oil and gas critics; says sector pays billions in taxes
With oil and gas companies under increased scrutiny for how they choose to use their record-breaking profits in 2022, the chief executive of Cenovus Energy Inc. took aim at critics Wednesday by highlighting the billions of dollars the industry is expected to contribute in taxes and royalties this year.
Brian Zinchuk on John Gormley: Sask First Act, drilling activity, lithium development, solar power near Estevan
Topics included the Saskatchewan First Act and the reasons behind it, drilling rig activity, Crescent Point, lithium development, and solar power near Estevan.
Saskatchewan First Act introduced to literally keep the lights on in this province, and allow farmers to keep using nitrogen fertilizer
Thou shalt not use coal for power generation post-2030, the federal government hath said. And it’s moving to do the same with natural gas by 2035. It also wants to limit farmers’ fertilizer usage, all in the name of climate change policies.
On Nov. 1, the Province of Saskatchewan said, “To hell with that,” but in a more sophisticated, legal manner.
Saskatchewan threw down the gauntlet with the federal government on Nov. 1, introducing Bill No. 88, The Saskatchewan First Act. If implemented in its current form, the Act basically says Saskatchewan will make its own decisions and rules on environmental standards, particularly those applying to greenhouse gas emissions and power generation.
Brian Zinchuk: The Saskatchewan First Act is about power production and farming production, and not using kerosene lamps
We finally got to see what Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is talking about, with regards to taking on the federal government’s climate change initiatives. And it’s a constitutional swing for the fences.
What was remarkable, however, is how rest of the media didn’t seem to fully get it.
None seemed to truly understand what this act is about. Maybe they didn’t read the whole act.
I did. Every word. And so can you, here.

Saskatchewan drilling rig report: the juniors are back in the game
ESTEVAN – The drilling rig report of Tuesday, Nov. 1, shows a noticeable uptick of involvement by small junior producers getting back into the drilling game, both in west central and southeast Saskatchewan. It also marks a big pickup for activity in the northwest from the big players in that area. That’s according to data from the Canadian Association of Energy Contractors, as published by RiggerTalk.com.
Biden paints oil firms as war profiteers, talks windfall tax
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday accused oil companies of “war profiteering” as he raised the possibility of imposing a windfall tax on energy companies if they don’t boost domestic production.
Biden in brief remarks criticized major oil companies for making record-setting profits while refusing to help lower prices at the pump for the American people. The president suggested he will look to Congress to levy tax penalties on oil tax companies if they don’t begin to invest some of their profits in lowering costs for American consumers. The president issued the warning just days before the Nov. 8 midterm elections.
‘Money for free’: Critics warn proposed Alberta well cleanup plan a royalty giveaway
EDMONTON — Critics fear Alberta’s new United Conservative premier is preparing to bring in a program that would use billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded royalty breaks to subsidize energy companies to fulfil their legal duty and clean up old wells.
The so-called RStar proposal, developed by an industry group, has been criticized by legal experts, energy economists and the province’s own internal analysts.

Imperial ‘striking a balance’ between shareholder returns and capital spending: CEO
Imperial Oil Ltd. announced Friday that it is raising its quarterly dividend by nearly 30 per cent and also plans to buy back up to $1.5 billion worth of shares — further evidence that shareholders of Canadian oil and gas stocks are reaping the benefits of 2022’s global energy crisis.
Guilbeault slams oilpatch for raking in cash and sitting idle on climate action
OTTAWA — The federal environment minister is calling out Canada’s oil companies for failing to put cash behind their promises to tackle climate change.
Steven Guilbeault says the country’s major oil players have promised to do something about greenhouse gas emissions, but instead have funnelled most of their record-breaking profits to shareholders.
This is at least the third time in the last six months Guilbeault’s frustration has spilled over as oil company profits soar. This time his critiques came in the form of a video posted to Twitter as major petroleum producers began releasing their third-quarter earnings.
Deborah Jaremko: A Matter of Fact: European Parliament is wrong to endorse ‘fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty’
The European Parliament is endorsing a dangerous and misguided “fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty” that would cause harm to people around the world.
The political forum is recommending that European Union member states phase out fossil fuels as soon as possible and stop all new investments in fossil fuel extraction.
The implication of the “treaty” is that ongoing use of oil and gas is an imminent threat to human society as bad as the atomic bomb.
That is wrong.
Brian Zinchuk: Schlumberger changes its name to SLB, part of the Get Woke, Go Broke movement
“Net zero.” “Decarbonize.” Changing their names to meaningless letters. Why do these terms and actions, from these utter behemoths of the oil industry, bring to mind the phrase, “Get woke, go broke?”

The four-year program that includes about $120 million for Atlantic Canada was announced by the federal department on Sept. 15.

Precision Drilling returns to profitability as oil and gas sector picks up pace
Increased activity in the North American oil and gas sector helped Calgary-based Precision Drilling Corp. return to profitability during the third quarter of 2022, even as the drilling and service sector as a whole struggles with ongoing labour shortages.
Precision — the largest drilling rig contractor in the country — reported a third-quarter profit of $30.7 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of $38 million a year ago, as its revenue gained 69 per cent.
The rise, and perhaps fall, of fracking in southeast Saskatchewan? Crescent Point starts drilling Viewfield Bakken wells without fracking them
CALGARY – If you were to ask someone what two technologies resulted in Saskatchewan’s “Bakken Boom,” the answers would surely be horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracking. Occasionally more legs, but especially more frac stages, were key.
It now appears that Crescent Point Energy Corp., which, through dozens of acquisitions, consolidated most of the Viewfield Bakken, is experimenting with moving away from fracking in that play.
Suncor to acquire Teck Resources’ stake in Fort Hills oilsands project for $1B
CALGARY — Suncor Energy Inc. will buy out Teck Resources Ltd.’s 21.3 per cent stake in the Fort Hills oilsands project for approximately $1 billion, the two companies announced late Wednesday.

Some days, the wind actually does blow in Saskatchewan. Wind power generation on Oct. 23 peaked at 94% capacity
REGINA – There are some days where the wind simply doesn’t blow. And there are some days where it does, and pretty hard, at that.
Oct. 23 was one of those days.

“Maybe your meatloaf wants to identify as an octagon? Find a container. Make it happen. Let your meatloaf be who it wants to be,” said Quick Dick.
