EPA, pipeline operator reach deal to clean up Kansas spill

MISSION, Kan. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it has reached an agreement with a pipeline operator to clean up a spill that dumped 14,000 bathtubs’ worth of crude oil into a rural Kansas creek.

The agency said in a news release that the Dec. 7 rupture of the Keystone pipeline affected 3 1/2 miles of the creek as it flows through rural pastureland in Washington County, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northwest of Kansas City.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrives later Monday in Mexico City, where he’ll take part in an afternoon discussion with business leaders from across the continent before the summit gets underway in earnest Tuesday.

While Trudeau is airborne, Joe Biden — fresh from his first presidential visit to the politically fraught southern border — will sit down for a bilateral meeting with Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

What will happen over the next twelve months? How does one prepare for events yet to transpire? Luckily for ya’ll, I will once again attempt to predict what going to happen in 2023. I tried this last year, with, uh mixed results. So once again, with the help of the “Fantasmical Prognostication Machine” AKA, my management decision making device AKA, my “Magic Eight Ball TM” we shall give it a whirl.

Ukrainian Christmas, in Canada, for refugees who have fled here

Ukrainian Christmas, in Canada, for refugees who have fled here

Today, Jan. 7, is what in Saskatchewan is commonly called “Ukrainian Christmas.” Really, it’s the celebration of Christmas based on the Julian calendar, followed by the Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox Churches.

The big event is Christmas Eve, on Jan. 6, with its 12 traditional meatless dishes. But this year, due to the war in Ukraine which started last February, there are a lot more Ukrainians who have celebrated their first Christmas here, in Canada.

EU hails high gas storage levels despite Russian cuts

BRUSSELS (AP) — Natural gas storage levels in the European Union stand at nearly 84% and were higher in December than the average amount in reserve 4-6 years ago, the EU’s executive branch said Wednesday, despite Russian attempts to choke off supplies amid its war on Ukraine.

1st tanker carrying LNG from US arrives in Germany

The first regular shipment of liquefied natural gas from the United States arrived in Germany on Tuesday, part of a wide-reaching effort to help the country replace energy supplies it previously received from Russia.

The tanker vessel Maria Energy arrived at the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, where its shipment of LNG will be converted back into gas at a special floating terminal that was inaugurated last month by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

David Yager: 2022 – the year fossil fuels once again became a preferred source of reliable, affordable energy

The global energy complex is under assault by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the exposed shortcomings of wind and solar, years of underinvestment in fossil fuels, and rising inflation and interest rates.

But for the past ten years, there has been an all-out crusade against fossil fuels. Oil company CEOs were branded climate criminals. It was morally reprehensible to own fossil fuel company shares or loan money to oil, gas or coal producers. Elections were won in Canada, the US and in Europe on pledges to replace fossil fuels.

Canadian oilpatch likely to surpass 2022’s production record, but only slightly

CALGARY — Canadian oil and gas companies are expected to increase spending in 2023, but analysts say it will be another year of modest growth and not a return to boom times.

For Canada’s energy industry, 2022 was the year that finally snapped a decade of weak commodity prices and brought prosperity back to the sector. With the lifting of global pandemic restrictions, the war in Ukraine, and the cumulative impact of years of under-investment in oil and gas, energy prices hit record highs in 2022 and Canadian companies reaped record profits.

Obituary: Brad Stroud, pipeliner, passes away at 67 in Yorkton. There would be no Pipeline Online without him

Editor’s note: Brad Stroud of Yorkton may not have run an oil company, or invented some new device or process. He was a humble man who was a blue collar worker all his life, much of it spent in the oilpatch, working on the Regina upgrader, numerous pipelines, services rigs, cranes, and the Fort McMurray oilsands. He was a generous man, whose Christian faith led him to help others in need, anonymously but generously.

Without him, Pipeline Online would not exist.

Year End with Premier Scott Moe, Part 4: Lithium, helium, rare earth elements, oil

Pipeline Online editor Brian Zinchuk spoke with Premier Scott Moe on Dec. 12 in a year-end interview. In Part 4, Moe discussed lithium, helium, rare earth elements, potash, copper, uranium and agriculture value-added processing.  “We have the fuel of today, but also the fuel of tomorrow, in our province,” Moe said. Also, Moe is asked about provincial geologists who’ve done pioneering work in these areas.

Year End with Premier Scott Moe, Part 2: oil prices, differentials, federal issues, pipelines and immigration

Pipeline Online editor Brian Zinchuk spoke with Premier Scott Moe on Dec. 12 in a year-end interview. In Part 2, Moe discussed the war in Ukraine is not over, but oil prices are lower than they were before it started, federal government causing a lack of investment in oil, oil price differentials, pipelines, crude-by-rail, immigration and birth rates.

TC Energy: Regulators OK reopening of Kansas pipeline segment

TC Energy: Regulators OK reopening of Kansas pipeline segment

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The operator of a pipeline that spilled about 14,000 bathtubs’ worth of heavy crude oil into a northeastern Kansas creek said Friday that it has permission from U.S. government regulators to reopen the repaired segment where the rupture occurred.

Canada-based TC Energy did not say exactly when it would reopen the section of its Keystone pipeline system from Steele City near the Nebraska-Kansas border to Cushing in northern Oklahoma. The company said it will have crews working through the Christmas holiday and also conducting “rigorous testing and inspections.”
