Wednesday morning, Alberta’s wind and solar power had flatlined to next to zero. Again
Wednesday morning, Alberta’s wind and solar power had flatlined to next to zero, again. Coffee makers in Edmonton and Calgary were not running on wind.
As the sun had not yet risen at 7:26 a.m. on Jan. 11, only 1 megawatt of power was being produced from solar, as is expected at this time of the winter (likely an error, as that one megawatt was reported throughout the night.) But wind power generation, which now has a nameplate capacity of 3,618 megawatts, was producing just 19 megawatts across 36 wind farms. And nearly an hour later, that number had only gone up to 26 megawatts, meaning that during morning preparations to go to work or school, Alberta’s grid got basically nothing from wind power.
After selling Fontana’s Trucking in 2006, Bruce Bailey was going to stick around 6 more months. 16 years later, he finally retired
“I am going to miss it. I know that for sure. Because I’m missing it now and I haven’t even left. I met a super bunch of people during my 39 years in the business. It’s amazing, the type of person that you have to be to endure in the oil industry because of the ups and downs and the speed of it.”

Brian Zinchuk: It’s about damned time Canada bought the F-35. On Monday, we finally did
Despite Trudeau’s mucking around with the procurement of these fighters for political show, he did allow his government to actually make the right choice – and one that was clearly not the one he would have initially picked. Eating that crow shows a certain level of maturity that most in Western Canada would not have expected from him, given his behaviour on pipelines and other items of national importance.

Ukrainian Christmas, in Canada, for refugees who have fled here
Today, Jan. 7, is what in Saskatchewan is commonly called “Ukrainian Christmas.” Really, it’s the celebration of Christmas based on the Julian calendar, followed by the Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox Churches.
The big event is Christmas Eve, on Jan. 6, with its 12 traditional meatless dishes. But this year, due to the war in Ukraine which started last February, there are a lot more Ukrainians who have celebrated their first Christmas here, in Canada.

EU hails high gas storage levels despite Russian cuts
BRUSSELS (AP) — Natural gas storage levels in the European Union stand at nearly 84% and were higher in December than the average amount in reserve 4-6 years ago, the EU’s executive branch said Wednesday, despite Russian attempts to choke off supplies amid its war on Ukraine.

1st tanker carrying LNG from US arrives in Germany
The first regular shipment of liquefied natural gas from the United States arrived in Germany on Tuesday, part of a wide-reaching effort to help the country replace energy supplies it previously received from Russia.
The tanker vessel Maria Energy arrived at the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, where its shipment of LNG will be converted back into gas at a special floating terminal that was inaugurated last month by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
David Yager: 2022 – the year fossil fuels once again became a preferred source of reliable, affordable energy
The global energy complex is under assault by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the exposed shortcomings of wind and solar, years of underinvestment in fossil fuels, and rising inflation and interest rates.
But for the past ten years, there has been an all-out crusade against fossil fuels. Oil company CEOs were branded climate criminals. It was morally reprehensible to own fossil fuel company shares or loan money to oil, gas or coal producers. Elections were won in Canada, the US and in Europe on pledges to replace fossil fuels.
Canadian oilpatch likely to surpass 2022’s production record, but only slightly
CALGARY — Canadian oil and gas companies are expected to increase spending in 2023, but analysts say it will be another year of modest growth and not a return to boom times.
For Canada’s energy industry, 2022 was the year that finally snapped a decade of weak commodity prices and brought prosperity back to the sector. With the lifting of global pandemic restrictions, the war in Ukraine, and the cumulative impact of years of under-investment in oil and gas, energy prices hit record highs in 2022 and Canadian companies reaped record profits.

Obituary: Brad Stroud, pipeliner, passes away at 67 in Yorkton. There would be no Pipeline Online without him
Editor’s note: Brad Stroud of Yorkton may not have run an oil company, or invented some new device or process. He was a humble man who was a blue collar worker all his life, much of it spent in the oilpatch, working on the Regina upgrader, numerous pipelines, services rigs, cranes, and the Fort McMurray oilsands. He was a generous man, whose Christian faith led him to help others in need, anonymously but generously.
Without him, Pipeline Online would not exist.
