The all-cash deal announced Tuesday will see Crescent Point acquire 600 drilling locations in the Montney region, adding 38,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) to the company’s production capacity.
To provide the building blocks of 21st century technology, Saskatchewan releases Critical Mineral Strategy
Critical minerals, the crucial ingredients for everything from cellphones to electric vehicles, are all the rage right now. And in a global race, Saskatchewan is staking its claim, figuratively and literally, in the development of many of these critical minerals.
On Monday, March 27, the Government of Saskatchewan has launched Securing the Future: Saskatchewan’s Critical Minerals Strategy to drive growth and development of the sector in the province.
As SaskPower talks about new solar, nukes and a transmission line to the U.S., wind power drops to 3.6% output the next day
For two days, SaskPower held open house session in Estevan about future projects planned for the area, including a 650 megawatt bi-directional power line connecting to the United States, possibly two nuclear reactors, and a 100 megawatt solar farm. SaskPower officials also spoke of an additional 3,000 megawatts of wind and solar power to be constructed by 2035. (Watch for a detailed story on Wednesday)
The next day, on March 25, SaskPower’s “Where Your Power Comes From” web page listed just how much power was produced by wind. And it wasn’t much.

Verbatim: Joint statement from President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with plenty to say on energy
Editor’s note: Sometimes its worth hearing, or reading things, “from the horse’s mouth,” as it were. Here’s the full joint statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Joe Biden on Friday, March 24, the day of Biden’s first state visit as president. I have bolded areas of interest to the energy sector. There are references to electric vehicles, critical minerals, net-zero, electricity, coal, nuclear fuel and reactors, and even pipelines. Pay particular note to the announcement of a one-year “Energy Transformation Task Force.”
Verbatim: U.S. President Joe Biden’s address to Canada’s Parliament
“And it’s going to spur clean energy investments all over the world. And explicitly, explicitly includes tax credits for electric vehicles assembled in Canada — recognizing how interconnected our auto industries are and our workers are.” – Joe Biden
Biden and Trudeau focus meetings on continental security, climate change
The two leaders made multiple announcements to that end following their bilateral meeting Friday, including a new, one-year joint energy transformation task force to hasten the pace of co-operation on critical minerals, batteries and electric vehicle production.

St. Lawrence Seaway shippers eye EV materials, but grain and ore remain the staples
Shippers who ply the St. Lawrence Seaway view critical minerals for electric vehicle batteries as key to their future — but it could be a while before the floodgates open on Canada’s largely untapped reserves.
Until then, grain and iron ore remain the staples, comprising nearly half of the 36.3 million tonnes of cargo that traversed the seaway last year.
Activist investor wants Parkland to consider strategic alternatives
A U.S. activist investor has set its sights on Calgary-based Parkland Corp., urging the fuel retailer to consider selling or spinning off its Burnaby, B.C., refinery.
New York-based Engine Capital LP., which owns about a two per cent stake in Parkland, sent a letter to the company’s board on Wednesday. In the letter, Engine criticized Parkland for being “unable to translate its advantaged strategic position and quality assets into adequate returns for shareholders,” and said the company could achieve better performance by becoming a pure play fuel and convenience retailer and getting rid of non-core assets.

Canada will take a ‘hard long look’ at UN call to speed emissions reduction: minister
Canada has set at least eight different emissions targets since 1988, and has failed to meet any of them to date. Its next target in 2030 hinges heavily on being able to ratchet down emissions from the oil and gas sector.
That 2030 target currently is to cut emissions so they are between 55 and 60 per cent of what they were in 2005. Based on emissions levels in 2020, meeting the 2030 goal would mean cutting about 23 million tonnes of emissions a year, on average. That’s the equivalent of taking five million passenger cars off the road every 12 months until the end of the decade.
