Ontario and Bruce Power begin planning for massive new 4,800 megawatt nuclear power addition
Bruce Power and the Province of Ontario announced initial work on the first major new nuclear power generating station in this country in two generations.
This is not “small modular reactors,” but 4,800 megawatts of “big nuclear,” to be built adjacent to the existing Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, on the shores of Lake Huron. For perspective, the most power SaskPower has ever generated was 3,910 megawatts on Dec. 30, 2021. If each of the new reactors turns out to be 1,200 megawatts – just one of those reactors would equal all four, combined, that Saskatchewan is currently considering.

Wilkinson says there are two paths: one “accepts the scientific reality of climate change,” the other “is blind hope”
We’re still going to use oil and gas, but we’re not going to burn it. That is, except for power generation, coupled with carbon capture. We need to adapt to a net-zero economy by 2050, otherwise global investment will pass us by, in addition to the climate peril. We have to double the electrical grid, or more. People against everything need to get out of the way and let us build things. And we can’t just hope for the best.
Those were the key themes that federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson spoke about June 28.
Jonathan Wilkinson’s full Just Transition speech, verbatim
It’s not often the minister largely responsible for implementing an idea to essentially phase out a nation’s most significant industry talks about that, here in Saskatchewan, but federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson did just that on Wednesday, June 28. He spoke to the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce at Innovation Place, on the University of Regina campus. He’s got a lot to say. Here is his full speech, verbatim:

Alberta optimistic about this year’s budget forecast despite drop in oil prices
Alberta Finance Minister Nate Horner says the government may have to lower how much it expects to take in from oil this year, but the overall budget outlook remains optimistic.
Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative government introduced a spend-heavy budget in February that also promised a $2.4-billion surplus based on West Texas Intermediate — the North American benchmark price for oil — averaging US$79 a barrel.
The West Texas price is well under that prediction, currently trading at just under US$70 barrel.
