Enbridge installs first of 71 wind turbines offshore of Dieppe, France

Canadian pipeline giant Enbridge and its partner EDF Renouvelables are developing the Fécamp Offshore Wind Project off France’s northwest coast, not far from Dieppe, according to Enbridge’s website.

“The 497-megawatt (MW) wind project will feature 71 Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy 7 MW turbines to be manufactured in France. The project will generate electricity equivalent to the power needs of more than 416,000 homes,” the company said.

For perspective, Boundary Dam Power Station is currently rated at 531 megawatts (not counting Unit 4, which is still in use from time to time).

On July 4, Enbridge posted on Linkedin, “The first of 71 wind turbines is up at our 500MW Fécamp Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of France.”

Turbines will be located between 13 and 22 kilometres off Fécamp’s coast, at depths around 30 metres, and deployed in an area of about 60 square km.

Enbridge has a 17.9% ownership stake in the Fécamp Offshore Wind Project, which is expected to enter operation in 2023.

The project website notes, (Google translated from French), “The fight against climate change is now a global objective. France, for its part, has set itself a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 .

“The French State thus wishes in particular to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind power on the territory and displays its development as one of the priorities among electrical renewable energies.

“In total, seven wind farms are to be commissioned between 2022 and 2028 : Saint-Nazaire (Loire-Atlantique), Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d’Armor), Fécamp (Seine-Maritime), Courseulles-sur-Mer ( Calvados), Île-d’Yeu-Noirmoutier (Vendée), Dieppe-Le Tréport (Seine-Maritime) and Dunkirk (North).

“Three calls for tenders launched by the Government are in progress: in Normandy for installed wind farms, as well as in Southern Brittany and the Mediterranean for floating offshore wind farms. Finally, the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, announced the launch of a call for tenders for the extension of the new park in Normandy.”
