Ontario ups its SMR plans to four reactors at Darlington
It turns out nuclear reactors are like potato chips. You can’t stop at just one.
The day after Ontario announced it would be building an additional 4,800 megawatts of nuclear reactors at Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, the province announced it would be dramatically expanding its planned rollout of small modular reactors at its Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. The announcement has significant impact on Saskatchewan, and its plans to build four of its own SMRs. The timing would allow Ontario Power Generation to apply learnings from the construction of the first unit to deliver cost savings on subsequent units. This is also the strategy SaskPower is following – allow Ontario to build the first, then learn from that experience.
Net-zero electricity grid for Alberta is possible, Wilkinson says
Against the backdrop of Alberta’s newest solar farm, federal Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said Tuesday he still believes the province can get its electricity grid to net zero by 2035 – in spite of Premier Danielle Smith’s insistence to the contrary.

Wind craters yet again in Alberta and Saskatchewan last week
Wind power in Alberta was pretty low for much of last week, often in the 100 to 200 megawatt range despite an installed based of 3,731 megawatts across now 37 wind farms, comprised of hundreds of wind turbines costing billions of dollar. But at 11:33 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, wind power production fell to 19 megawatts, or 0.5 per cent capacity.

Energy Transition Podcast, Episode 69: Addition and Adaptation: The Transition Alternative?
Armando Cavanha, Irina Slav, David Blackmon and Tammy Nemeth discuss Addition and Adaptation: The Transition Alternative?
Kipling area Bekevar Yōtin Wind Facility turns sod, gets $50 million from feds, money that came from Saskatchewan businesses via output based pricing
A new 200 megawatt wind power facility has started construction near Kipling, and it is doing so with the help of $50 million of federal money, Cowessess First Nation, the Canada Infrastructure Bank, and international private investment.
On June 29, federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson attended a sod turning at the Bekevar Yōtin Wind Facility site, southeast of Kipling. Yōtin is Saulteaux for “wind,” which brings change, according to Erica Beaudin, chief of Cowessess First Nation.
Enbridge installs first of 71 wind turbines offshore of Dieppe, France

Ontario and Bruce Power begin planning for massive new 4,800 megawatt nuclear power addition
Bruce Power and the Province of Ontario announced initial work on the first major new nuclear power generating station in this country in two generations.
This is not “small modular reactors,” but 4,800 megawatts of “big nuclear,” to be built adjacent to the existing Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, on the shores of Lake Huron. For perspective, the most power SaskPower has ever generated was 3,910 megawatts on Dec. 30, 2021. If each of the new reactors turns out to be 1,200 megawatts – just one of those reactors would equal all four, combined, that Saskatchewan is currently considering.
Wilkinson announces $7 million for four Indigenous energy projects in Saskatchewan
On June 28, Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson announced investments totalling over $7 million for four energy projects affiliated with Indigenous organizations or communities in Saskatchewan. The announcement was part of the federal government’s ongoing efforts to increase “clean energy” production, along its plan for Net Zero by 2050 (and Net Zero by 2035 for power production.)

Provinces have a say: Eyre responds to Wilkinson’s “just transition”
Federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson had a lot to say about Canada’s future in his June 28 speech to the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce on the “just transition.” Saskatchewan Justice Minister and Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre counters that the provinces have a say, too.
Natural Resources Minister has faith electric tractors are coming
If you regulate it, they will come. Electric tractors, that is.
That was the gist of a response from federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson, when asked about the Clean Fuel Regulations, affordability and electric tractors on June 29.
Wilkinson says there are two paths: one “accepts the scientific reality of climate change,” the other “is blind hope”
We’re still going to use oil and gas, but we’re not going to burn it. That is, except for power generation, coupled with carbon capture. We need to adapt to a net-zero economy by 2050, otherwise global investment will pass us by, in addition to the climate peril. We have to double the electrical grid, or more. People against everything need to get out of the way and let us build things. And we can’t just hope for the best.
Those were the key themes that federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson spoke about June 28.
Jonathan Wilkinson’s full Just Transition speech, verbatim
It’s not often the minister largely responsible for implementing an idea to essentially phase out a nation’s most significant industry talks about that, here in Saskatchewan, but federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson did just that on Wednesday, June 28. He spoke to the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce at Innovation Place, on the University of Regina campus. He’s got a lot to say. Here is his full speech, verbatim:
