There’s been a lot of talk about “just transition,” “energy transition” and “coal transition,” but precious little action converting fossil fuel workers to new industries. Rod Cullen, a coal miner from Estevan, is bucking that trend and has launched a business to allow him to eventually “transition” away from his job operating dozers and draglines. He’s also the first currently employed coal miner to successfully secure coal transition funding to help launch a new venture.

As Moe and Smith respond to Guilbeault on power generation and oil and gas production, wind power flatlined, again
As both Saskatchewan and Alberta premiers are expressing concern about federal efforts to rid the Canadian power grid of fossil fuels, as well as curtailing fossil fuel production, the renewable power generation the federal government is pushing failed, once again. And it looks like the fight between Ottawa, Regina and Edmonton is heating up when it comes to all of the above.

Open letter: CCS is needed and ready to address climate change
The significant support for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects adopted by the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in recent months has highlighted the importance of CCS in meeting international climate goals. Indeed, achieving net-zero emissions will rely heavily on implementing CCS in industries across the world — power generation, cement, steel and fertilizer manufacturing and mining, in particular — as well as for hydrogen fuel production from natural gas and addressing emissions from the production and consumption of fossil fuels as the world undertakes an orderly transition towards decarbonization.
Climate talks chief, who also heads oil company, says world must ‘attack all emissions, everywhere’
BERLIN (AP) — The head of this year’s United Nations climate talks called Thursday for governments and businesses to tackle global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in all regions and sectors if they want to stop the planet from passing a key temperature limit agreed on more than seven years ago.

Ontario ups its SMR plans to four reactors at Darlington
It turns out nuclear reactors are like potato chips. You can’t stop at just one.
The day after Ontario announced it would be building an additional 4,800 megawatts of nuclear reactors at Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, the province announced it would be dramatically expanding its planned rollout of small modular reactors at its Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. The announcement has significant impact on Saskatchewan, and its plans to build four of its own SMRs. The timing would allow Ontario Power Generation to apply learnings from the construction of the first unit to deliver cost savings on subsequent units. This is also the strategy SaskPower is following – allow Ontario to build the first, then learn from that experience.
Net-zero electricity grid for Alberta is possible, Wilkinson says
