David Yager: As the world pivots on climate policy, Canada keeps pitching last year’s plan
Only a year ago, Canada was determined to be a climate leader in every way. Last July the federal government announced it would not only meet its 2030 targets but exceed them. Instead of cutting emissions by 30 per cent from 2005 levels, the new goal was 40 to 45 per cent. This was part of the Liberal election platform on September 20, 2021. Framework legislation was introduced earlier this year.
On July 18, Ottawa reminded Canadians that its emission reduction goals would not be interrupted by events as trivial as geopolitical energy chaos.

Gas pipeline shutdown starts amid German suspicion of Russia
A major gas pipeline from Russia to western Europe shut down for annual maintenance on Monday as Germany prepared to give the green light for 10 coal-fired power plants to restart amid concerns that Russia may not resume the flow of gas as scheduled.
The Nord Stream 1 pipeline runs under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany and is the latter’s main source of Russian gas. Gas is usually sent onward to other countries as well. It is scheduled to be out of action until July 21 for routine work that the operator says includes “testing of mechanical elements and automation systems.” The operator’s data showed the gas flow dropping as planned on Monday morning.
Suncor cancels investor update in wake of CEO’s resignation
CALGARY — Suncor Energy Inc. has cancelled its planned investor update about oilsands operations and safety in the wake of last week’s resignation of chief executive Mark Little.
The Calgary-based energy giant had scheduled the update, which was to take place Wednesday, months ago in response to investor concerns about operational performance and workplace safety. The company had pledged to provide an update on what it’s doing to improve safety and operations at its oilsands facilities.

Ukraine criticizes Canada over return of turbines for Russia-Germany pipeline
Ukraine is asking Canada to reconsider a decision to return repaired turbines to Germany for a pipeline that delivers natural gas from Russia to Europe.
Canada’s Natural Resources minister said a “time-limited” permit would be granted to allow the return of the turbines, which are currently in Montreal for scheduled repairs.

In my last column (for those three people that read my stuff in order) we discussed what the new employee can do to get that job and do well at it. Well, at least we hope so. But this is only half the story. It is up to a few other people to make this symbiotic relationship work out. The employers, the HR departments, managers and co-workers all have a hand in making this brand new relationship work. Us old-school guys have an archaic way of thinking that the new hire is there to work hard, do our bidding and make us happy. That may have been kinda true at one time (I said true, not right) but it sure isn’t today. Let’s have a look at this and see if we can figure it out together.
Royal Helium develops plan for maximizing helium extraction from Nazare, begins drilling at Val Marie
SASKATOON – Royal Helium started drilling for helium near Climax, Saskatchewan, in January, 2021. So far, they have punched four holes there, and two northwest of Ogema, with Val Marie next on the agenda. But once they found helium, the key thing was figuring out how to maximize its extraction.
To do that, the company turned to the University of Regina’s petroleum engineering department, and specifically to Dr. Gary Zhao, P.Eng, to model drilling scenarios for the Nazare reservoir. On July 5, Royal announced their results
