Oil could be headed back to US$100 a barrel this year: Industry experts

A surprise production cut by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC plus) is just one factor lifting the spirits of Canada’s energy sector executives these days, as experts say crude prices could return to US$100 a barrel later this year.
“Buoyant” and “extremely positive” were some of the terms used by CEOs on Tuesday to describe the mood at a major oil and gas conference in Toronto, which took place just two days after the unexpected move by OPEC sent oil futures surging.

Op-Ed: Saskatchewan Coal Transition Centre: Sabotaging our future: How SaskPower’s $1 billion scheme to import power from the U.S. will devastate Estevan and leave Saskatchewan’s economy vulnerable

SaskPower’s plan to replace clean, reliable and affordable coal-fired power from Estevan’s Boundary Dam with 650 MW of power from the Southwest Power Pool in the U.S. starting in 2027, will not only cost Saskatchewan residents a billion dollars, it will also devastate Estevan and put the entire provincial economy at risk. We hope that SaskPower has considered the following:

For want of a pipeline: Canadian LNG should power low-carbon revolution, report says

For want of a pipeline: Canadian LNG should power low-carbon revolution, report says

As the world struggles to find the right balance between a carbon-free future and a present that still runs on fossil fuels, Canada could be leveraging its natural-gas riches to help fuel both, a new report suggests.

The report, to be released Monday by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, urges the federal government to finally get serious about building the infrastructure necessary to fast-track the extraction and export of liquid natural gas.

‘Why don’t you fight for what we have, and what works?’ SaskPower holds open house in Estevan on $1 billion interconnect with US, solar and nuclear

‘Why don’t you fight for what we have, and what works?’ SaskPower holds open house in Estevan on $1 billion interconnect with US, solar and nuclear

This story is long, but worth it, especially if your livelihood is impacted by coal mining or power generation. Pipeline Online goes deep into the weeds with SaskPower on its plans for a 650 megawatt interconnect with the US., solar, nuclear power, backup generation for days the sun doesn’t shin and the wind doesn’t blow, carbon capture plans (or lack thereof), and more. And some of the public’s reaction is pretty raw.

Verbatim: NDP grilled SaskPower and minister on billion dollar powerline interconnect with the US

The following is a Hansard excerpt of the Crown and Central Agencies Committee of the Legislature on Dec. 20, 2022. In that discussion, NDP SaskPower Critic Aleana Young asked Crown Investments Corporation Minister Don Morgan about the interconnect’s cost.
To put this into context, you really want to read the related story: ‘Why don’t you fight for what we have, and what works?’ SaskPower holds open house in Estevan on $1 billion interconnect with US, solar and nuclear

Lithium in SK, Part 17: Lithium prices have come down … to only US$70,000 a tonne. A decade ago, they were US$7,000

Let’s put this in perspective: Around 2012, I wrote my first story on lithium, and at the time the prices had recently tripled to around $7,000 a tonne. In the fall of 2021, when Prairie Lithium (which this week was acquired by Arizona Lithium) was drilling the first targeted lithium well in Saskatchewan, the price was $21,000 a tonne. By the next spring, it was $65,000 a tonne.

Feds outline $83B in clean economy tax credits in bid to compete with U.S. incentive

Serious money is heading for Canadian industries looking to reduce emissions after the federal government unveiled its answer to the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act.

The spending commitments announced in Tuesday’s federal budget include tax credits for investments in clean electricity, clean-tech manufacturing, and hydrogen that together are expected to cost some $55 billion through to the 2034-35 fiscal year.

Crescent Point to buy Spartan Delta Corp.’s Montney assets in $1.7-billion deal

Crescent Point Energy Corp. has reached a deal to buy Spartan Delta Corp.’s Montney oilfield assets in Alberta for $1.7 billion, a deal that will see the Calgary-based company significantly grow its presence in what is one of North America’s largest unconventional petroleum plays.
The all-cash deal announced Tuesday will see Crescent Point acquire 600 drilling locations in the Montney region, adding 38,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) to the company’s production capacity.

To provide the building blocks of 21st century technology, Saskatchewan releases Critical Mineral Strategy

Critical minerals, the crucial ingredients for everything from cellphones to electric vehicles, are all the rage right now. And in a global race, Saskatchewan is staking its claim, figuratively and literally, in the development of many of these critical minerals.

On Monday, March 27, the Government of Saskatchewan has launched Securing the Future: Saskatchewan’s Critical Minerals Strategy to drive growth and development of the sector in the province.

As SaskPower talks about new solar, nukes and a transmission line to the U.S., wind power drops to 3.6% output the next day

For two days, SaskPower held open house session in Estevan about future projects planned for the area, including a 650 megawatt bi-directional power line connecting to the United States, possibly two nuclear reactors, and a 100 megawatt solar farm. SaskPower officials also spoke of an additional 3,000 megawatts of wind and solar power to be constructed by 2035. (Watch for a detailed story on Wednesday)
The next day, on March 25, SaskPower’s “Where Your Power Comes From” web page listed just how much power was produced by wind. And it wasn’t much.
