Alberta optimistic about this year’s budget forecast despite drop in oil prices
Alberta Finance Minister Nate Horner says the government may have to lower how much it expects to take in from oil this year, but the overall budget outlook remains optimistic.
Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative government introduced a spend-heavy budget in February that also promised a $2.4-billion surplus based on West Texas Intermediate — the North American benchmark price for oil — averaging US$79 a barrel.
The West Texas price is well under that prediction, currently trading at just under US$70 barrel.
Alberta ends 2022-23 with petro-powered $11.6B surplus
The Alberta government says it ended the 2022-23 budget year with a petro-powered $11.6 billion surplus, up from its third-quarter estimate of $10.4 billion.
Climate policies and fossil fuel: Clean fuel regulations and carbon pricing explained
On Saturday, the federal government’s long-promised clean fuel regulations will take effect across Canada. Here are five things to know about what they are, how they will affect you and why they are different from the carbon price.
Natural gas power generation with carbon capture likely allowed post-2035, says federal natural resources minister
Hold on one second – the proposed Clean Electricity Regulations might not be entirely shutting the door on natural gas-fired power generation post-2035. But we might have to build very expensive carbon capture facilities on our gas-fired power stations.
“More that we need to do,” says federal Minister of Natural Resources regarding coal transition
REGINA – Just before the House of Commons rose for its summer break, the Natural Resources Committee issued its “Just Transition” report. Federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson was in Regina on June 28 to speak to the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce about “Just Transition.”
A significant part of that report talked about using the current coal transition program as a model to transition the much, much larger oil and gas sector to other jobs.

Dutch government to end gas extraction in northern province after 60 years and many damaging quakes

Editorial: Facebook and Instagram to start blocking Pipeline Online links on Sunday. This is 1979, on the way to Orwell’s 1984
I will be attending federal Minister of Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson’s event with the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce in Regina on June 28. He will be talking about the “just transition,” which means to do away with the oil and gas sector, one of Saskatchewan’s most important industries. But you won’t be able to share any of my stories coming from that event on Facebook, or Instagram. I don’t even know if you can privately share it on Facebook Messenger. Likely not. So a federal minister might be speaking about the demise of your industry and livelihood, and you can’t share or even read those stories through Facebook. There’s a wee possibility that “just transitioning” your job out of existence might upset you. But that story will be verboten on Facebook. As will every other story.
On longest day of the year, Saskatchewan’s grid-scale solar produced 8 megawatts out of 30
Saskatchewan has just 30 megawatts of grid-scale solar power installed, spread across three projects of 10 megawatts each. And on the longest day of the year, June 21, they averaged 8 megawatts of output in total. That’s 26.7 per cent of capacity.
Bloc Québécois pan “just transition” report for sanitizing that term from French version, and not going far enough
The Bloc Québécois is aware that the term “Just Transition” is a young concept that leaves room for multiple interpretations. Among others, it is rejected by the current
Alberta government and the Western oil and gas industry. In its current form, the final report reflects the Committee’s failure to address “Just Transition”, and aligns itself with
the West’s position. During its work, the Committee heard members deny even the reality of climate change, thus diluting the concept of energy transition. The treatment of other
concepts such as “ruralities”, “aboriginal communities” and “energy security” also occupied a disproportionate proportion of the exchanges, deviating from the very objective of the study.

Dissenting report from Conservatives wants to expand oil and gas, not transition it away
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources Committee report released its “just transition” report on June 19. Entitled “Creating a Fair and Equitable Energy Transformation,” the report means to change Canada in almost every manner imaginable, from powering vehicles and heating homes, to largely winding down one of our nation’s largest industries – oil and gas.
Both the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois released dissenting reports, while the Liberals and New Democrats supported the primary report. This is the Conservative response.
