According to SaskPower’s Where Your Power Comes From webpage, wind power generation had an exceptional day in this province on Friday, Jan. 24. And the next day, it just about did it again.

According to the daily log, which provides 24-hour averages for each category of power generation, wind output averaged 728 megawatts, out of a nameplate capacity of 817. That’s 89 per cent, the highest number Pipeline Online has observed to date from the SaskPower site, although it could have been higher on days that were missed. Jan. 15 saw 696 megawatts, or 85 per cent capacity.

Total system demand averaged 3,310 megawatts on average, while power generated averaged 3,383 megawatts. An average of 73 megawatts was exported. According to X account @SKElectricity, which logs SaskPower’s data, peak demand was 3,506 megawatts. That’s just 404 megawatts short of SaskPower’s all-time record of 3,910.

Wind accounted for 22 per cent of total generation that day.

What’s also notable is that was the average, meaning there were times during the day wind generation exceeded 728 megawatt and were over 90 per cent output.

Drivers on Saskatchewan highways sure noticed on that day, and a fun time was not had by all on the roads.

Hydro generated 12 per cent, or 400 megawatts on average. Solar was negligible, at 3 megawatts.  Combined, wind, hydro and solar made up 34 per cent, or just over a third, of power generation that day, on average.

Natural gas generation was reduced to and average of 1,250 megawatts, producing 37 per cent of the power that day. Coal was down to 25 per cent, or 862 megawatts. “Other,” which includes biomass and purchases from neighbours, was 139 megawatts or four per cent.

And on Jan. 25, wind output was 720 megawatts, just eight shy of the previous day. That’s 88.1 per cent output.

Pipeline Online provides the in-depth coverage on energy issues in this province that no other media comes close to. It does NOT receive federal journalism subsidies, and it will NOT allow the federal government to limit its freedom of speech, as it is now moving to regulate podcasts. With recent action from Facebook to block news links, it’s important to follow Pipeline Online in other manners. The easiest is to check each morning at PipelineOnline.ca, with the top story posted at 7 a.m. Monday to Friday, and additional coverage throughout the day and weekend.
