Williston Basin Petroleum Conference preview – a renewed focus on oil

REGINA – This year’s edition of the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference is set to take place at the Regina Delta Hotel conference centre April 28-30. The event, which alternates between North Dakota and Saskatchewan, will see a renewed focus on oil production.

Here’s just a few of the numerous speakers during the event:

Among the speakers are Premier Scott Moe and Minister of Energy and Resources Colleen Young.

John Jeffrey, CEO of Saturn Oil and Gas, will be speaking. He appeared last week on the most recent episode of the Pipeline Online Podcast, which you can watch here.

Scott Southward, president and CEO of Steel Reef Infrastructure, the company that handles most natural gas processing in southern Saskatchewan, is on the list.

Jeff Lawson, executive vice president of Cenovus, Saskatchewan’s largest oil producer, will be speaking.

Dale Babiak, chief operating officer of Stratcona Resources Ltd., will also be taking the stage. The company’s recent presentation outlines plans to expand production in this province by 48,000 bpd by 2030.

Ken From, former CEO of SaskEnergy as well as the PTRC, is the keynote speaker.

Timothy Nesheim will be representing the North Dakota Geological Survey. PTRC president and CEO Ranjith Narayanasamy and Dan Kohlruss of the Saskatchewan Geological Survey will lead a large contingent from the PTRC and Saskatchewan Geological Survey, who work hand in hand in organizing the event and make up a large number of speakers.

Among those will be Gavin Jensen, whose pioneering work on lithium exploration in Saskatchewan has led to the start of a new industry. That industry is on the verge of commercialization, possibly as soon as late this year. But this time Jensen will be talking about CO2-enhanced oil recovery.

April 28 will focus on a core workshop at the Saskatchewan Subsurface Geological Laboratory, also known as Saskatchewan Energy and Resources Core Examination Facility, on Dewdney Ave. That workshop is sold out.

The main event starts on April 29. First up on stage will be a conversation between Premier Moe and Jeff Lawson of Cenovus. They will be followed by an industry panel featuring Ranjith Narayanasamy of the PTRC, Minister of Energy and Resources Coleen Young, Dale Babiak of Strathcona Resources and Dave Mombourquette of Whitecap Resources.

Some heavy duty geology presentations will be followed by a luncheon panel talking about collaboration agreements in technical spaces.

The afternoon features more detailed geology presentations including ones on a new play in Manitoba and a look at the Upper Shaunavon. Multilateral wells will be discussed in depth.

April 30 will have Ken From, former CEO of SaskEnergy, speaking about “Humanity – we have a problem.”

The geology focus throughout the morning will include enhanced oil recovery.

John Jeffrey, CEO of Saturn Oil & Gas, will present the luncheon keynote address.

The afternoon will delve deeply in the carbon capture, utilization and storage – focusing on the enhanced oil recovery part of “utilization.”

Turning flare gas into power generation will be discussed by Steel Reef CEO Scott Southward.

The day will wrap up with a look at critical minerals, including helium and lithium.
