My apologies, life got a little busy, but I’m going to finish off the 12 Rigs of Christmas! You’ll see rigs of companies still here, and others that have come and gone. Some have changed names and colours. People have come and gone. But you know what? Our industry is still keeping our trucks fueled and our people warm. Please share these posts – you might be in them, or recognize others who are.
This is Precision Drilling Rig 120. I got a call in January, 2013, that a family which still had mineral rights north of Macoun would soon be having a rig drilling on their land in early February. They were pretty excited to soon be getting royalty cheques, and they wanted something to remember it by. They asked me to go out and photograph the rig drilling the well so that they could have a canvas to hang on their wall. I think they lived in B.C., if I recall. I believe the oil company was Longview Oil. I don’t know if I ever heard of them again after that. I suspect, like most small juniors, it was gobbled up.
Anyhow, I had been at a Panther Rig just a week or two before, a couple miles down the road, so I had a decent idea of where they wanted me to go. It was really, REALLY cold when I shot this Precision rig. Like, -35 C cold. Ask you’ll see in one of the shots, I played with Photoshop a bit, and inserted the rig into the Battle of Hoth from the Empire Strikes Back. It looked like Hoth, because it felt like Hoth.
I wasn’t on the rig floor for this shoot – it’s all shot from a distance, as they wanted something showing the whole rig. But carrying my frozen tripod around to get all the angles turned into a successful shoot. They chose one of the sunset shots for the wall canvas.
