If you run into Jayson and Tasha King at the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show, congratulate them. That’s because the JK Junior is now 10 years old.
The innovative blue box addresses a key environmental concern in oil production, namely catching any possible leakage from the stuffing box on a reciprocating rod pump and stopping it in its tracks.
It does so by being mounted on top of the stuffing box, and allowing the polished rod to pass through it. There’s an internal float. If fluid from the well for whatever reason escapes the stuffing box, it is captured in the metal box. Once that fluid lifts the internal float, a signal is sent to the pump controller to shut off the jack. No spill, no mess.

The design is also reinforced such that you can set the rod string on it without issue. Oil is placed in the bottom of the box, and a wick allows that oil to cool and lubricate the polished rod.
Over the years, the design has evolved into several iterations. One is the JK Junior Mini. It’s designed specifically to fit a strap jack, also known as a Rotoflex.
Jayson King explained, “It’s for customers in the states that requested it. That’s who started as a customer in the states requested it, and so we designed it.
It’s half the size, and has both ports on the front so as to not interfere with the strap.

Other changes over the years include changes to the tabs, and the addition of a gasket on the bottom. The latches have been refined as well. Other models are meant to accommodate large stuffing boxes.
The units are manufactured locally, in Weyburn.
Tasha King said they’re used mostly in southeast Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba, but also Albert and North Dakota.
The JK Junior itself was an evolution of the original JK Containment, a large portable steel tub that can provide secondary containment for large tanks.
