ESTEVAN – SaskPower is doing another round of public consultations on nuclear power generation in southeast Saskatchewan. On Oct. 7, SaskPower representatives spoke to the Estevan Chamber of Commerce.

This round is presenting the updated information about the site selection for Saskatchewan’s first nuclear reactors planned. On Sept. 29, Premier Scott Moe announced it would be at the Rafferty site. That’s straight south of Macoun, on the north shore of the Rafferty Reservoir.

The Boundary Dam site is no longer being considered. Notably, most media in Saskatchewan initially erroneously reported that one singular small modular reactor was planned for the site. In fact, it is actually two reactors, GE Vernova-Hitach BWRX-300s, each capable of 300 megawatts of power generation.

Oct. 6 Estevan Chamber of Commerce Coffee Talk focusing on SMR development.

“The events are an opportunity for interested people to meet some of the SaskPower nuclear team and learn about the project through casual conversations. SaskPower will share basic information about the project and site evaluation looks like now that the Rafferty site has been selected, and will answer any other questions that attendees may have. Public feedback is also important, and SaskPower will take the opportunity to listen to and learn from people in the community as well,” said SaskPower’s Travis Sandeski.
