ESTEVAN – Every April, the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance holds a series of Dig Safe Breakfasts for contractors across the province, bringing home the message of safe practices while digging and doing related construction work.

One of the last of the series was held in Estevan on April 27, where the parking lot was so full of company pickups that later arrivals had to park across the street at the far end of that parking lot.

Kaleigh Churko, a pipeline operator with Pembina, spoke on behalf of the SCGA.

She said, “So 2023 was actually a really big year for SCGA. We acquired Sask 1st Call and run it. We took that over from SaskEnergy, so it’s actually a really big change. Our website and everything has changed, the mobile app has been updated. So it may look different when you guys go on there. There might be some things to learn, but it is a little bit better. And we want to hear from you guys to make it even more better.”

There was good attendance at the Estevan Dig Safe Breakfast, put on by SCGA.

Each year the SCGA puts together a video which touches on significant safety aspects. In this year’s video, traffic control was highlighted as one of the main areas of concern.

Churko noted in 2021 SCGA launched Ground Disturbance for Young Workers. “It’s just like a ground disturbance course. It’s free online. And it’s aimed towards the ages 14 to 21. But anyone can take it. It’s a real basic ground disturbance course that will give you lots of information.”
