ESTEVAN – Prairie Dawg Trailer Sales & Rentals has opened a new division, offering steel sales. That new division is Prairie Dawg Steel Supply.

The Estevan-based company is taking over the Russel Metals contract of Sholter Horsman, which offered steel sales for many years. Sholter Horsman is moving their furniture sales to Weyburn, and shutting down their longstanding steel sales portion of the business.

Prairie Dawg Steel Supply is owned by Travis Holma, Zach Holma and JJ Holma making up the ownership.

Zach will be handling the steel division, Kelan Grube is their other staff member. JJ is running marketing through his company Mountain Dawg Marketing.

Zach also has a concrete business, Evolution Concrete, which will be his focus in the summer. In the winter, he’ll be at the steel supply shop.

“We pretty much bought their inventory,” said Travis on Nov. 1, they day they opened. That purchase included the racks, which are now in Prairie Dawg’s new building on at 469 Devonian Street, the former Electrogas location. The yard also contains inventory for trailer sales.

Asked how the sale came about, Travis said, “There was nowhere in town that would sell cut lengths.”

“Then that was a big thing for us, and talking to other supply and maintenance service companies in oilfield, that’s where the idea came.”

He noted it helped the shop and yard “in a good spot.” Indeed, it’s close to the supply stores where crews regularly pick up their other needed items, from pipe to rope, soap and dope. The proximity to the supply stores means crews won’t have to chase across town to pick up the steel needed to build a pipe rack, for instance.

Prairie Dawg offers I-beams, C-channel, angle iron, flat plate, square tubing and more, in a variety of dimensions. They also offer aluminum and stainless steel products as well.

The supply is coming from Russel Metals in Regina and Saskatoon. Getting that contract was part of the deal with Sholter Horsman. They’ll be taking deliveries on Fridays. Orders that are in by Monday should see Friday deliveries. “There’s free delivery over 2000 pounds,” Zach said. At that volume, deliveries are made directly by Russel, which means they’re not limited by a local radius.

Asked what sort of potential they see for the new business, Travis said, “Tons – like crew companies building batteries, stairs, pipe racks, RMs, farmers.”

Some of their first orders coming in were from Saskatchewan’s nascent lithium industry, they noted.

Zach said one of their advantages is “being able to cut whatever you need, for farmers, oilfield, versus having to buy full lengths of something.”

Travis noted the diversification will provide some stability from the viability of the oilpatch. While they expect about 70 per cent of the business will be oilfield-related, agriculture and other areas are expected to fill the rest.

Monday to Friday 8-4, but they will take calls on the weekend.

All of this is in addition to Prairie Dawg Trailer Sales, which has grown considerably since its humble start. In October, they moved 35 trailers. Indeed, another load of trailers pulled into the yard at the conclusion of the interview.
