It was bound to happen sooner than later. Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek gave up his newly-won seat so that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre could run, having lost his own Ottawa Carleton seat. The most significant part of Battle River-Crowfoot is the pipeline terminal at Hardisty, which is the crossroads for most of Western Canada’s oil production, including that from Fort McMurray and northwest Saskatchewan. While he has not yet won this seat, it was only a matter of time before Poilevre did a video for social media about the Hardisty terminal.

Poilievre used the video to again make the case for additional pipelines to tidewater, including the defunct Energy East and Northern Gateway projects, to get a better price for Canadian oil as opposed to selling at a discount to the U.S.

It’s a pretty good reflection on the significant of Hardisty, but it’s not entirely accurate. He refers to the Enbridge Alberta Clipper pipeline as “Enbridge’s major export line to the U.S.” Alberta Clipper is only one of a series of pipelines that collectively constitute the “Enbridge Mainline,” (and yes, they capitalize “Mainline.”) Alberta Clipper, now referred to as line 67, was built over 2008-2009. It went into service April 1, 2010.

Here’s Poilievres’ video, released on various social media the morning of Sunday, June 29.
