Speaking to reporters while in Calgary on Feb. 15, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was asked if he had spoken recently to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith about upcoming federal legislation relating to the “just transition” away from fossil fuels. Here’s Poilievre’s response:
“I did have a chance to speak with Premier Smith. We talked about health care, public safety and defending Canada’s proud energy sector. I do share Alberta’s concern.
“I do share Alberta’s concern about Trudeau is anti-energy and anti-regional resource agenda. He has said that he wants to phase out our oil sands. He says that southern Ontario should move away from manufacturing. He has attacked our mining sector. This is a deliberate, radical agenda, by the costly coalition of the NDP and Justin Trudeau, to shut down our resources and make us hopelessly dependent on foreign polluting dictatorships.
“Every time Justin Trudeau attacks our energy sector, a big smile appears on the face of Vladimir Putin, because it means him and other dictators like him, will control more of the world’s energy market. When in fact, we have the most ethical energy on planet Earth. When Trudeau took office. We had 15 proposed natural gas liquefaction and export terminals on his desk. Zero had been completed. What does that mean? It means that Asia burns more coal, pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere rather than using clean Canadian natural gas. It means that Putin dominates the European energy market, and uses that dominance to raise funds to fund his war against Ukraine. We could be displacing those dictators. But yet, when the Japanese prime minister and the German chancellor come here asking for natural gas, Trudeau says ‘No! Go talk to Vladimir Putin. He’ll give you all the gas you need.’
“When I’m prime minister, I will repeal C-69, the anti-energy law. I’ll clear the way for our mines, our resources and our natural gas export terminals. We will liquefy natural gas in Canada. We will ship it to Asia to shut down dirty coal fired plants and replace them with clean Canadian gas. And we will ship it to Europe, to displace Vladimir Putin and turn dollars for dictators into paychecks for our people right here in this country. Let’s bring it home.”
