Decouple Media: The Army’s Second Attempt at Fielding Microreactors (There’s a Sask connection)

Pipeline Online Podcast Ep. 24: Premier Scott Moe Year End
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe joins the Pipeline Online Podcast in his annual year-end interview. The discussion digs into the coal decision, Saskatchewan’s move into nuclear, carbon capture, interties to Alberta’s grid, and the Alberta-Canada MOU. Decouple Media: Why the First Nuclear Renaissance Failed, and Whether America Can Build 8 AP1000s Now?
As for what this means for Saskatchewan – the US planning on building these reactors does something very important – it puts a price on them. It also will develop a hot production line and a functioning supply chain. So keep that in mind.
Decouple Media: The AP1000 Masterclass: Return of the Big Boring Reactor
When Premier Scott Moe talks about “1000 megawatt reactors”, he’s pretty much referring to the AP1000. As Saskatoon-based Cameco bought 49 per cent of Westinghouse in 2023, and Moe has joined the presidents of Cameco and Westinghouse Canada on stage at conferences in Saskatoon this year, this is the most likely design Saskatchewan would go with, should it go into “large nuclear,” after it forays into “Small modular reactors.”
Pipeline Online Podcast Ep. 23: Estevan Mayor Tony Sernick
Estevan is the Energy City. This year saw the revival of its core industry – coal-fired power generation. That could eventually lead to more carbon capture, utilization and storage in the oilfield. Estevan is the chosen location for Saskatchewan’s first planned nuclear power reactors. There’s also a solar plant under construction, and an intertie to the US. Estevan is also spearheading a coal-to-graphite project and coal-to-hydrogen project.
