Shares in Canada’s biggest oilsands producers came under pressure Monday after the U.S. military captured the Venezuelan leader and President Donald Trump announced plans to put that country’s oil industry into the hands of American companies.
Brian Zinchuk: Trump’s takeover of Venezuela means Canada needs those west coast pipelines ASAP
Anyone remember when Trump said back on Jan. 23, 2025, “We don’t need their oil and gas. We have more than anybody”?
It was in the same statement where Trump was making some of those initial 51st state comments, a couple days after his second inauguration. You know, the ones we were supposed to get our elbows up for.
Rubio says US won’t govern Venezuela but will press for changes through oil blockade
Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested Sunday that the United States would not take a day-to-day role in governing Venezuela other than enforcing an existing “oil quarantine” on the country, a turnaround after President Donald Trump announced a day earlier that the U.S. would be running Venezuela following its ouster of leader Nicolás Maduro.
Carney says Canada ‘welcomes the opportunity for freedom’ after Maduro’s capture
Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted on Saturday afternoon by noting that one of the first actions taken by his new government in March was to impose additional sanctions on Nicolás Maduro’s “brutally oppressive and criminal regime.”

One more time: Alberta’s wind power hits zero output for the second day in a row
For the second day in a row, wind power generation in Alberta fell to zero megawatts, out of a nameplate capacity of 5,684 megawatts.
SaskPower seeking 3.9% rate increases this February and next February
A first season episode of The West Wing called “Take Out the Trash Day” explained that governments tend to put out bad news on Fridays. And at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, SaskPower sent out a press release announcing it is seeking a 3.9 per cent rate increase effective February 1, 2026, and a further 3.9 per cent rate increase effective February 1, 2027.
Zero. Zip. Zilch: Wind output in Alberta on Jan. 2
One megawatt divided by the total nameplate wind capcity is 1.759324419422942e-4. That’s 0.0176 per cent, or less than one fifth of one tenth of one per cent capacity. And zero, of course, needs no calculation. It’s zero.

Michael Zwaagstra: Liberals being hypocritical on plastics ban
Plastic straws suck.
Actually, they don’t. That’s the problem.

So, what exciting, interesting and potentially terrifying will happen in the next 365 days? What can we in the energy industry do to prepare? I will once again take a shot at what is going to happen in 2026. I have attempted this for a few years now with mixed results. So once again, “What the Hell” and let’s see what we can ascertain with some help from the “Fantasmical Prognostication Machine” AKA, my “Magic Eight Ball TM” and we give it the old college try.
Decouple Media: The Army’s Second Attempt at Fielding Microreactors (There’s a Sask connection)
Back in October, Westinghouse pulled the eVinci microreactor from the Saskatchewan Research Council, which had been planning on building the first eVinci microreactor. The reason? It turns out the US military under Trump has more money than the SRC. Who woulda thunk it?
Nova Scotia premier wants Nova Scotia to develop its own natural gas resources
With the end of Sable Island gas, Nova Scotia again had to import gas. And in 2014, just a few years before Sable Island supply gave out, the province banned fracking for natural gas. A province heavily dependent on equalization payments from Alberta’s natural gas development refused to develop its own, but continued to cash the equalization cheques from Alberta.
