OPEC+ makes big oil cut to boost prices; pump costs may rise
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The OPEC+ alliance of oil-exporting countries decided Wednesday to sharply cut production to support sagging oil prices, a move that could deal the struggling global economy another blow and raise politically sensitive pump prices for U.S. drivers just ahead of key national elections.
Energy ministers meeting at the Vienna headquarters of the OPEC oil cartel cut production by a larger-than-expected 2 million barrels per day starting in November after gathering for their first face-to-face meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Enserva’s statement on capping and cutting oil and gas greenhouse gas emissions, warns of “carbon leakage”
Should Canadian standards be too strict for production, jurisdictions with no or low standards will continue producing and this will lead to increased carbon leakage from energy products. Carbon leakage caused by Canadian policy would create conditions for jurisdictional divestment and in turn decreased Canadian fiscal capacity, weakening multiple net-zero oriented actors and entities. Instead of focusing on domestic reductions, Canada should pursue a net zero strategy that maximizes global decarbonization efforts and is aligned with allied nations’ strategies.
TC Energy, one of Canada’s two major pipeline players, is building solar power south of Calgary
TC Energy Corporation announced on Oct. 4 it will begin pre-construction activities of the Saddlebrook Solar Project located near Aldersyde, Alberta. TC Energy is investing $146 million to build its first Canadian solar power project.
The announcement is one of a series of renewable energy projects backed by major traditional oil and gas players.
Editorial: Pipeline Online marks one year, a year where energy has been the story worldwide
But more importantly, energy is THE STORY of our modern day. How we create it, store it, use it. How it impacts our lives, our economies, our jobs. Fourteen years ago, environmental and Indigenous concerns seemed on the margins. Now they seem like the only concerns. The pendulum is swinging.
And the war in Ukraine has focused our minds, sharply, on energy. In the past few days, two major pipelines mysteriously blew up in the Baltic Sea. Europe is concerned about freezing this winter, while their economy is going through one of the worst energy price shocks ever. That’s leading to European industries shutting down due to energy poverty.
Sweden sends special diving vessel to area of pipeline leaks
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Sweden has sent a vessel capable of “advanced diving missions” to the Baltic Sea area where ruptured undersea pipelines had leaked natural gas for days, the Swedish navy said Monday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday accused the West of sabotaging Russia-built natural gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea to Germany, a charge vehemently denied by the United States and its allies, who noted that Russia has been blackmailing Europe with reduced gas supplies for months.

Danes: Nord Stream 2 pipeline seems to have stopped leaking
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Danish Energy Agency says one of two ruptured natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea appears to have stopped leaking natural gas.
The agency said on Twitter on Saturday that it had been informed by the company operating the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that pressure appears to have stabilized in the pipeline, which runs from Russia to Germany.

Allies aim for risky Russian oil price cap as winter nears

Brian Zinchuk: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 29 times, shame on me
It is abundantly clear that spending billions on wind power is a fool’s errand. If all that money had been spent on just one single nuclear reactor, Alberta would have consistent power 24/7 days a week. The money spent on wind to date in Alberta likely could have built two 300 megawatt SMRs, maybe more.
Weekend watch: Red Adair puts out the Devil’s Cigarette Lighter
“In the oilpatch, there’s no such word as ‘can’t.’ We’ll do it, somehow.” – Red Adair
This took place 60 years ago in 1961-62. They use a massive hook to tear apart the destroyed drilling rig, and covered their D8 dozers with corrugated metal as heat shields.
Red Adair is probably the most famous oilwell fire fighters in history. At 12:12 he refers to his to protégés, Asger “Boots” Hansen and Ed “Coots” Matthews, who went on to form Boot & Coots, which was very active, along with Adair’s company, Red Adair Co., in putting out the Kuwaiti oil wells lit ablaze by Iraq in the 1990-1991 Gulf War.
Jim Warren: Who’s next? First it was fossil fuels that were demonized, now is it agriculture?
They say misery loves company. But having company is probably small comfort for people working in western Canada’s energy industry. That being said, it is becoming clear that the fossil fuel industry is no longer the only major economic sector in the west to find itself targeted for abuse under federal environmental policy. Just a few weeks ago, farmers and ranchers were singled out for special treatment on behalf of climate change mitigation and environmental protection.
As if adding the carbon tax to natural gas used for grain drying and fertilizer production hadn’t done enough to frustrate, the federal government has announced its intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from nitrogen fertilizer by 30 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030. Farmers and farm organizations have noted such a move will reduce crop yields and overall food production.
NATO believes Baltic Sea gas leaks were sabotage
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — NATO said Thursday it would retaliate for any attacks on the critical infrastructure of its 30 member countries as it suggested that damage to two gas pipelines off Denmark and would-be member Sweden in international waters in the Baltic Sea is the result of sabotage.
“Any deliberate attack against Allies’ critical infrastructure would be met with a united and determined response,” NATO ambassadors said in a statement. They said that the damage to the pipelines between Russia and Germany “is of deep concern.”

Europe ramps up energy security after suspected sabotage
BRUSSELS (AP) — European companies are ramping up security around pipelines and energy prices are climbing again as the suspected sabotage of two pipelines that deliver natural gas from Russia underscored the vulnerability of Europe’s energy infrastructure and prompted the EU to warn of possible retaliation.
Some European officials and energy experts have said Russia is likely to blame for any sabotage — it directly benefits from higher energy prices and economic anxiety across Europe — although others cautioned against pointing fingers until investigators are able to determine what happened.
Enbridge sells minority stake in seven pipelines to Indigenous communities
Enbridge Inc. has signed a deal to sell a minority stake in seven pipelines in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta to a group of 23 First Nation and Métis communities for $1.12 billion.
Alberta premier Jason Kenney called the purchase a “historic, game-changing deal” at a press conference Wednesday with multiple stakeholders present, including Enbridge executives and members of some of the communities involved in the purchase.
“This is a big deal,” he said. “This is the single largest Indigenous transaction in the natural resource sector in the history of North America.”

Brian Zinchuk: Nuclear power is Estevan’s to lose, if Saskatchewan goes ahead with small modular reactors
On Sept. 20, SaskPower announced they were considering two areas as possible sites for Saskatchewan’s first two nuclear reactors. One is at Lake Diefenbaker, near Elbow, and the other is Estevan, with three nearby reservoirs under consideration.
When it comes to choosing between Estevan and Elbow for future nuclear power development, Estevan would have to try really hard to lose.
Really, really hard.
NDP SaskPower critic Aleana Young says small modular reactors can play a role in our energy future
REGINA – NDP MLA Aleana Young’s prior job, before becoming a gourmet cheese store owner and Regina University MLA, was working with the Petroleum Technology Research Centre. She focused specifically on the Aquistore project. Aquistore takes carbon dioxide captured by the Boundary Dam Unit 3 Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Project and pumps it underground over three kilometres deep, two kilometres west of the power plant.

BERLIN (AP) — The Nord Stream 1 pipeline leading from Russia to Europe has reported a drop in pressure, only hours after a leak was reported in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea off Denmark, the German economy ministry said.
Denmark reports leak in gas pipeline in Baltic Sea
BERLIN (AP) — Denmark’s maritime authority said Monday that a gas leak had been observed in a pipeline leading from Russia to Europe underneath the Baltic Sea and that there is a danger to ship traffic.
The operator of Nord Stream 2 confirmed that a leak in the pipeline had been detected southeast of the Danish island Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
