Eyre said, “That’s a federal policy which we hope will never see the light of day, but which is moving along. We will freeze in the dark. And we know that. Saskatoon (is) powered by the Queen Elizabeth, a national gas-powered power station. The entire City of Saskatoon (would be) in huge trouble.”

SaskPower is on track to reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 50 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030. In the process, the amount of non-emitting electricity in Saskatchewan’s generation mix will increase from approximately 35 per cent today to between 40 and 50 per cent, the press release said.
But that’s nameplate capacity – the theoretical amount facilities can put out in ideal conditions. The reality has proven to be far from that. Wind and solar typically produce nothing near nameplate capacity, and coal and natural gas combined make up 65 to 84 per cent of Saskatchewan power production on any given day.

Canadian Natural touts its economic contribution against backdrop of soaring profits
Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.’s president Tim McKay added his voice Thursday to the chorus of oilsands executives who in recent days have been pushing back against critics by touting their industry’s contributions to the overall economy.
McKay, who heads Canada’s largest oil and gas producer, said on a third-quarter earnings conference call on Thursday that CNRL is expected to contribute $11 billion in taxes and royalties to federal and provincial governments this year, a 120 per cent increase from 2021.

Enbridge CEO says federal incentives for clean tech will spur investment in Canada
The new incentives for clean energy development in the federal government’s fall fiscal update will make a real difference in helping to attract investment capital to Canada, the chief executive of Enbridge Inc. said Friday.
On a conference call to discuss the pipeline giant’s third quarter financial results, CEO Al Monaco said the Calgary-based company is encouraged by measures announced by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on Thursday.

Many elections have been won on the future of energy. Fossil fuels are bad. Renewables are good. Financial support for oil, gas or coal producers was branded as a crime against the future of civilization. Those who asked questions were labelled climate change deniers.
But that was so 2021. Everything has changed.

Europe urged to save natural gas to avoid shortage next year
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Europe could face a severe natural gas shortage next year and needs to act now to reduce use, the International Energy Agency said in a report Thursday, warning against complacency in an energy crisis triggered by Russia’s war in Ukraine after countries were able to build up storage of the fuel to heat homes and generate electricity this winter.
The IEA said Europe benefited from some Russian gas supplies over the summer and sharply reduced competition from China for scarce shiploads of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, and those factors could be one-offs, the Paris-based organization said. Along with mild weather, that has pushed down natural gas prices from August highs.
Suncor reducing contractor work force by 20 per cent to improve safety, efficiency
CALGARY — Suncor Energy Inc. is reducing the size of its contractor work force by 20 per cent as part of its effort to improve safety and performance at its oilsands operations.
Interim CEO Kris Smith told analysts on a conference call Thursday that more than half of the work force reductions have already been completed, with the remainder on track to be completed by the first half of 2023.

David Buckingham talked about new projects, while Travis Keisig spoke about the realties of just how much power comes from those renewable projects. Both are from the Saskatchewan Party. NDP members did not bring up solar or wind in their throne speeches.

Saskatchewan First Act introduced to literally keep the lights on in this province, and allow farmers to keep using nitrogen fertilizer
Thou shalt not use coal for power generation post-2030, the federal government hath said. And it’s moving to do the same with natural gas by 2035. It also wants to limit farmers’ fertilizer usage, all in the name of climate change policies.
On Nov. 1, the Province of Saskatchewan said, “To hell with that,” but in a more sophisticated, legal manner.
Saskatchewan threw down the gauntlet with the federal government on Nov. 1, introducing Bill No. 88, The Saskatchewan First Act. If implemented in its current form, the Act basically says Saskatchewan will make its own decisions and rules on environmental standards, particularly those applying to greenhouse gas emissions and power generation.

None seemed to truly understand what this act is about. Maybe they didn’t read the whole act.

Biden paints oil firms as war profiteers, talks windfall tax
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday accused oil companies of “war profiteering” as he raised the possibility of imposing a windfall tax on energy companies if they don’t boost domestic production.
Biden in brief remarks criticized major oil companies for making record-setting profits while refusing to help lower prices at the pump for the American people. The president suggested he will look to Congress to levy tax penalties on oil tax companies if they don’t begin to invest some of their profits in lowering costs for American consumers. The president issued the warning just days before the Nov. 8 midterm elections.
‘Money for free’: Critics warn proposed Alberta well cleanup plan a royalty giveaway
EDMONTON — Critics fear Alberta’s new United Conservative premier is preparing to bring in a program that would use billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded royalty breaks to subsidize energy companies to fulfil their legal duty and clean up old wells.

Guilbeault slams oilpatch for raking in cash and sitting idle on climate action
OTTAWA — The federal environment minister is calling out Canada’s oil companies for failing to put cash behind their promises to tackle climate change.
Steven Guilbeault says the country’s major oil players have promised to do something about greenhouse gas emissions, but instead have funnelled most of their record-breaking profits to shareholders.
This is at least the third time in the last six months Guilbeault’s frustration has spilled over as oil company profits soar. This time his critiques came in the form of a video posted to Twitter as major petroleum producers began releasing their third-quarter earnings.

Ottawa waiting on draft proposals from provinces for $250-million home heating fund
HALIFAX – Environment and Climate Change Canada says it’s still waiting for draft proposals from most provinces on administering a $250-million home heating assistance program announced six weeks ago.
The four-year program that includes about $120 million for Atlantic Canada was announced by the federal department on Sept. 15.
