‘A reflection’: Stampede tarp auction an indicator of Alberta’s booming economy
CALGARY — The amount of money that was flowing freely at the annual Calgary Stampede canvas auction Thursday night was just the sort of gusher that Alberta's oil and gas industry likes to see. The event is typically considered a bellwether for...
CBC Saskatchewan grills Trudeau over justice minister’s comments on natural resources; plays clip which PM denies, then acknowledges
It’s not often you hear the CBC relentlessly calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to task on live radio, but that’s exactly what happened the morning of April 13.
The CBC’s Stefani Langenegger had Trudeau on a 11 minute call that morning.
Pandemic relief Accelerated Site Closure Program now concluded, and every dollar was spent cleaning up 8,800 wells and facilities
The onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic was shocking for many reasons, and to many industries. One of those initially hit hardest was oil and gas. While shutdowns affected everything from restaurants to retail stores, not many saw the price of their primary product go into negative territory, if only briefly. Oil did, in April, 2020.
For Saskatchewan, oil, the second-largest industry after agriculture, was in serious trouble. Enormous numbers people were being laid off in almost every oilfield-related company. Activity ground to a stop, as did revenue. Calls to the federal government for support were indeed answered, with $400 million from the Government of Canada to properly abandon and clean up inactive wells and flowlines. The program came to be known as the Accelerated Site Closure Program. It was administered by the Saskatchewan Research Council.

That’s up from $3.1 million in the Feb. 7, 2023, sale.
Beware risk of ‘mutually sabotaging competition’ on corporate subsidies: Freeland
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland warned a U.S. audience Wednesday about the potential dangers of a global subsidy “race to the bottom” as government largesse fuels the growth of the new green economy.

Trudeau’s says Lametti “said no such thing,” Poilievre accuses Lametti of threatening something he didn’t, and Lametti says he didn’t commit to what he committed to
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Winnipeg on Wednesday, April 12 to talk about “clean energy.” While there, he was asked about the kerfuffle between his justice minister and the Prairie Premiers on natural resources in recent days.
Prairie premiers’ fears about Lametti comments have ‘no grounding in truth’: Trudeau
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is accusing Prairie premiers of distorting the words of his justice minister after comments David Lametti made at a meeting of Assembly of First Nations chiefs last week.
Op-Ed: Saskatchewan Coal Transition Centre: No Country for Old Miners
The federal government and SaskPower have done their best to kill coal in Estevan. They may yet succeed. Much of the focus is on what will replace coal; wind, solar, SMRs (CCS has been rejected by the powers that be in Regina) but what is to become of our coal miners? The skills and experience that these workers have, is difficult to replace. If coal miners and their families decided to move to find jobs elsewhere, the impacts on the community will be devastating.
Federal justice minister denies saying what he clearly said on natural resources, Prairie premiers release joint statement
OTTAWA, REGINA, WINNIPEG, EDMONTON – The dustup over provincial control of natural resources continued into April 11, with the federal Justice Minister and Attorney General David Lametti putting out a statement denying he said what he clearly said, and the three...

Yorkton’s Louis Dreyfus canola crushing plant to double in size, driven by the Clean Fuel Standard Saskatchewan’s government opposes
One of the driving factors for massive expansion of canola crushing processing in Saskatchewan has been the implementation of the federal Clean Fuel Standard, one of a series of federal measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a effort to curb anthropogenic climate change. It’s purpose is to decarbonize hydrocarbon-based fuels.
They actually made a movie called “How to Blow Up a Pipeline.” It opened April 7
“We have to show how vulnerable the oil industry is, by hitting something big.”
Those are the words of an actress in the trailer for How to Blow Up a Pipeline, a new movie released by Elevation Pictures, the same people who produced Brendan Fraser’s The Whale and Everything Everywhere All At Once, both Oscar-winning films.
If only Wiebo Ludwig could have seen see this.

OTTAWA, REGINA – Last week, two things happened that could have profound impacts on natural resources development in Saskatchewan. One is a hint the federal government might want to take control of natural resources away from the provinces, and the other is the Saskatchewan government’s assertion that’s not going to happen.

Weekend Watch: Sucker Rods the Amoco Way
It may be in Spanish, but the visuals are quite interesting. This is a training film (note, not video, as video wasn’t a thing then) from the 1960s. So we’re looking at almost 60 years old, yet a lot of the hardware is unchanged, from the sucker rod wrenches (with a snipe!) to the elevators. There’s even power tongs. And yet some things have changed. Bonus points for catching them using a gin pole truck to unload the rods from the flat deck. This is from https://www.youtube.com/@PeriscopeFilm channel.

Brian Zinchuk: How does an ice age start? With one snowflake
Editor’s note: I originally wrote this column in mid-April 10 years ago, at the tail end of a winter that never seemed to end. Funny how things haven’t changed that much since then, have they? Wasn’t the world supposed to warm up in the meantime? Anyhow – take the dates in that context. Also, looking at what Lake Tahoe has been getting, they might be living what I describe here, for real.
Remember how SaskPower was supposed to retire Boundary Dam Units 4 and 5? About that…
They can’t, yet, so they won’t.
On April 4, SaskPower said they would be extending the lives of both of those 139 megawatt units.
Energy executives say feds must make good on pledge to speed up project approvals
Canada’s oil and gas sector is hopeful the federal government will live up to its budget-day pledge to speed up the time it takes to build major infrastructure projects.
The Liberal government announced last week that it will unveil a plan aimed at speeding up the federal permitting process for major infrastructure projects before the end of the year.
