Damage to gas pipeline, telecom cable connecting Finland and Estonia caused by ‘external activity’
HELSINKI (AP) — Damage to an undersea gas pipeline and telecommunications cable connecting Finland and Estonia appears to have been caused by “external activity,” Finnish officials said Tuesday, adding that authorities were investigating.

The coming startup of the Trans Mountain pipeline will help boost Canadian oil production to an all-time high within the next two years, according to a new report.
Letter to the Editor: More thoughts as to why activity levels are so low
I read your articles regularly and with interest as I have been involved in the Saskatchewan oilpatch for the last 27 years, finding oil and building and selling small private companies. I think all your points about industry activity levels and how the provincial government can help are correct and appropriate. We should encourage them as much as possible.
I would like to add a couple more thoughts as to why activity levels are so low.
Just 29 drilling rigs working in Saskatchewan on Oct. 3, and only 26 were drilling for oil
Does it look like the end of December? No. But several oil companies working in Saskatchewan have shut down their drilling programs until the end of the year, meaning three months of no drilling, before planned resumption of drilling in the new year. This, despite oil selling for US$89.33 per barrel of West Texas Intermediate.
Brian Zinchuk: Forget a northern energy corridor to Hudson Bay – just do it within Manitoba
There’s been talk of an energy corridor running from Port McMurray to Fort Nelson on Hudson Bay.
However, it all depends on Manitoba’s election on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Everyone knows about Fort McMurray, but next to no one knows about Port Nelson, on the mouth of the Nelson River. Nor should they.
Here’s a better idea – build it all within Manitoba.
If your company wants in on Saskatchewan’s coming nuclear power development, be in Regina on Wednesday
SIMSA has been tasked by the provincial government to develop a nuclear supply chain within Saskatchewan, especially since current estimates are up to $4-$5 billion per reactor, although they could be potentially less. SaskPower estimates peak workforce will be 1750 people during construction, per unit. Thus, there will be opportunities to be had, to the tune of several billion dollars, in what will likely be the priciest infrastructure project in this province to date.

Splashed across billboards and city buses, on newspaper spreads and Facebook feeds, the “Let’s Clear the Air” ad campaign by the Pathways Alliance group of oilsands companies is a multi-million-dollar public relations blitz by an industry keen to show it’s committed to helping fight climate change.
Brian Zinchuk: Some suggestions for the Saskatchewan government to stimulate activity in the province’s oilpatch
As I noted on Sept. 28, there’s a substantial amount of concern in the oilpatch about the lack of activity despite high oil prices. As one person told me, “When oil was $40 a couple years ago I was optimistic that a price recovery would lead to increased activity in our region. Now that we’re struggling to keep a double digit rig count in SE Sask with $94 oil ($127 CAD) it’s tough to stay optimistic.”
Sovereignty act may be used to fight 2035 net-zero electricity plan: Alberta premier
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she would use her province’s sovereignty act as a last resort to challenge any attempt by the federal government to impose a net-zero electricity grid by 2035.
Smith says achieving net-zero 12 years from now is not realistic, adding that it could lead to power blackouts because Alberta wouldn’t have a reliable source of baseload power such as natural gas.

In the last week I’ve spoke to some of the most knowledgeable people I know in the Saskatchewan oilpatch, business owners all, from Weyburn, Lloydminster and several from Estevan. There’s a rising chorus of dissatisfaction amongst them. Things should be booming in this province’s oilpatch, but they aren’t. And this disquiet could threaten the governing Saskatchewan Party with the potential loss of a key portion of its base.
Part 2: Converting the carbon capture plant from coal to natural gas could reduce emissions, but lead to the end of coal at Estevan
Converting Boundary Dam and Shand Power Stations to natural gas could dramatically reduce CO2 emissions, especially if you factor in the existing carbon capture plant. But it would lead to the end of coal mining at Estevan.
