EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — A fire broke out at a Chevron oil refinery just outside Los Angeles on Thursday night, sending towering flames into the air that were visible for miles.

MEG Energy Corp. says a second major independent proxy advisory firm has recommended its shareholders back a takeover offer for the company by Cenovus Energy Inc. 

The head of a group representing First Nations along British Columbia’s coast says they will not support a new pipeline proposed by Alberta and nothing can be done to change that. 

Premier Danielle Smith says Alberta is committing $14 million to a West Coast oil pipeline do-over that hinges on First Nations getting on board early and Ottawa reversing a tanker ban that would make such a project unworkable on the northern B.C. coast.  

Cenovus is planning on taking two steps forward after one big step backward this year in northwest Saskatchewan, announcing plants to “improve and expand four existing thermal facilities in the region.” This comes after a blowout in May at its Rush Lake 2 facility put both Rush Lake 1 and 2 out of commission for the foreseeable future.

Conservative Party of B.C. Leader John Rustad says “Indigenous rights and private property rights cannot coexist” and he wants the Supreme Court of Canada to resolve the conflict as soon as possible.

More than 250 elected officials across Canada have signed onto a campaign calling on the federal government to prioritize major infrastructure projects that help in the fight against climate change.
