Weekend Watch: Why Venezuela is Preparing to Conquer Guyana
What’s really interesting are the North Dakota and Alberta/Canadian connections. As Venezuelan heavy crude production soared, US Gulf Coast refineries tooled up to handle it. But as their government essentially destroyed their economy, combined with US sanctions, the Canadian oilsands, and maybe, too, the Lloydminster region, benefitted by replacing that oil with our own.
Wind bottoms out across 14 states in Southwest Power Pool SPP on Dec. 22
That also meant that of any electrons coming across the border at that time, if SaskPower was buying any power from SPP, 83.4 per cent of that power would have been coming from coal and natural gas, and would not have had a carbon tax applied to it.
Five years ago today, 427 trucks rolled through Estevan, protesting Trudeau’s energy policies
Five years ago on this day, Dec. 22, 427 semis, service rigs, bed trucks, crew trucks, pickups and everything in between showed up on a spur-of-the-moment to protest the energy policies of the Canadian federal Liberal government. It took less than 48 hours, from the time the decision was made to go ahead with a truck convoy protest in Estevan, until the first truck rolled out of Bert Baxter Transport’s yard.
Saskatchewan’s Year in Energy: Premier Scott Moe, 2023: Part 3: Clean Electricity Regulations and Nuclear Power
Clean Electricity Regulations proposed by the federal government mean to totally change our nation and its economy. And nuclear power is really the only option Saskatchewan has for large-scale, baseload power that does not emit greenhouse gasses.
Saskatchewan’s Year in Energy: Premier Scott Moe, 2023: Part 2 Oil Drilling, or Lack Thereof
Oil prices were up in 2023, but oil drilling in Saskatchewan certainly didn’t reflect that. So Pipeline Online asked what Saskatchewan is going to do about it.

Energy, and the “energy transition” being forced upon Canadians by the federal government, is becoming the dominant story, affecting all our lives and everything we do. In his year-end interview with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Pipeline Online dives deep into the biggest energy issues of the past year.

Did you know EV’s “Electric vehicles can be driven in very cold weather?” That’s what the feds are saying.

Jim Warren: Davos in the Dunes: COP28 a virtuous festival for the pampered and the pious
The zeal of the virtuous is a mighty thing. It cannot be bruised by rank hypocrisy or the large-scale squandering of public funds. Then again, maybe Jet travel and 24-hour a day air conditioning are but a small price to pay for saving us from mass extinction.
What is carbon capture and how much of a solution is it after COP28?
An agreement at the United Nations-led climate conference to transition away from fossil fuels brought a measure of relief for climate activists, even as many said it doesn’t go far enough. They also saw something to like in what the agreement said about carbon capture.
Cenovus releases 2024 capital budget, no new Lloydminster thermal projects mentioned
CALGARY – Saskatchewan’s largest oil producer, Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX: CVE) (NYSE: CVE) announced its 2024 budget on Dec. 14. Continuing with the growth plan embarked on in 2023, Cenovus expects to invest capital of between $4.5 billion and $5.0 billion in...
Enbridge sells Alliance Pipeline, Aux Sable to Pembina Pipeline
In 1999-2000, the Alliance Pipeline was built from Fort St. John to the outskirts of Chicago, cutting right across Saskatchewan along the way. It was to be a game-changer for natural gas from northeast Alberta and northwest British Columbia, allowing otherwise largely stranded gas access to mid-continental markets and ultimately allowing for the more recent growth in the Montney gas play.
WestJet ending flights from Lloydminster to Calgary in April
It can be a long drive from Lloydminster to Calgary. And it looks like it will be again.

“We reached a historic consensus to move away from fossil fuels in energy systems,” Guilbeault’s statement on the conclusion of COP28, verbatim
““The final agreement gives us a fighting chance to meet our climate goals. It is a promise by all countries to work together to keep the world we share within 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming, because that is what science tells us is needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. I have attended COPs since they started.”

Op-Ed: Deidra Garyk: The Impact of ESG on the Energy Sector, Part 2
Editor’s note: Like or hate it, believe it’s a passing fad or the wave of the future. ESG came out of nowhere about four years ago and now is at the forefront of concern for almost every larger business in the energy sector, and beyond. But it turns out it’s even bigger than that. This deep dive into ESG comes from Deidra Garyk, who livea and breaths ESG in her daily work as manager of ESG and sustainability for a major oilfield services company.
Guilbeault hails ‘monumental’ COP28 deal, others warn of ‘dangerous distractions’

A hereditary chief with a British Columbia First Nation at the centre of protests against the Coastal GasLink pipeline says an Amnesty International report tells the truth about “police violations” of Indigenous rights when they removed and intimidated protesters.
Brian Crossman: Climate hysteria, teachers, kids and the end of the world
His eleven-year-old daughter came home from school and said to him, “Daddy, we need to talk about the industry you work in.” She continued with, “Teacher said that if we don’t quit using fossil fuels, we will all be dead in ten years.” He was taken aback by this, especially since this is in Calgary. The same Calgary that is the center of the Alberta oil patch.
Tories have ‘successfully’ scapegoated carbon price in affordability crisis: Trudeau
The Liberals’ signature climate policy to put a price on pollution is not unravelling, and it is not the main reason for inflation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says, despite what the Conservatives insist.
Feds “focused on targeting the shutdown of a complete industry, regardless of whether they’re going to meet their emissions targets or not,” says Moe in Dubai
DUBAI – While Saskatchewan was putting its best foot forward at COP28 in Dubai, the federal government appeared to be the proverbial Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown.
Guyana agreed to talks with Venezuela over territorial dispute under pressure from Brazil, others
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — The government of Guyana, under pressure from neighboring Brazil and a Caribbean trading bloc, agreed Sunday to join bilateral talks with Venezuela over an escalating territorial dispute.
