Brian Zinchuk: A plan to save coal, power generation, and the oil industry in southeast Saskatchewan
What if there was a way to keep coal mining jobs in Saskatchewan, continue to produce low-cost electrical power, and extend the production of a substantial portion of Saskatchewan’s oilfields not by decades, but by generations? And in doing so, we could still dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and maybe save some money by reducing our nuclear rollout?

Wilkinson says no carbon rebates for Saskatchewan after province says it won’t remit
Moe said while the province’s natural gas utility, SaskEnergy, has stopped remitting the federal charge, residents are still paying it on gasoline, diesel, propane and other goods.
“If Saskatchewan people stop getting the rebate entirely, Saskatchewan should stop paying the carbon tax entirely,” said Moe.
We’re not remitting carbon tax to the feds, says SaskEnergy/SaskPower minister

Don’t block our mountains or mess with good farmland: Alberta releases renewable power rules
The announcement was made a day after Alberta’s 45 wind farms spread across the southern part of the province produced next to zero power for 12 hours. For over 40 minutes, the 1,519 wind turbines in Alberta were producing net zero power whatsoever. For those 12 hours, the 4,481 megawatts of installed wind power were generating under 10 megawatts.
Two days before Alberta is to lift its renewables pause, wind output falls to zero
On Feb. 29, the Alberta government is expected to lift its pause on wind and solar project approvals. For most of Wednesday, Feb. 27, wind power generation in Alberta had flatlined. Out of an installed nameplate capacity of 4,481 megawatts, total output was single digits for 12 hours. Most of that time total output was around two megawatts, and for much of an hour, it was a big fat zero.
Whitecap is now injecting CO2 into the Frobisher, opening up all sorts of possibilities
Ever since 2000, the Weyburn Unit has injected CO2 into the Marly and Vuggy formations. But starting late last year, Whitecap Resources has begun experimenting injecting carbon dioxide into the underlaying Frobisher formation.
The results could be profound for southeast Saskatchewan, as most drilling activity in southeast Saskatchewan these days is focused on the Frobisher. If additional carbon dioxide was available, the possibilities are enormous. And so far, results have been positive.

Did you know oil and gas is Saskatchewan’s largest industry, as measured by GDP?
You’d be forgiven if you thought agriculture was Saskatchewan’s largest industry. By many measures – people and communities impacted, land area affected, and culturally, it certainly is. But not by all measures, apparently. When it comes to GDP – gross domestic product – the measure used to measure economies, oil and gas supersedes mighty ag.

While voicing its opposition to federal oil and gas emissions caps, Saskatchewan goes to Houston to seek investment
One step forward, two steps back: While the federal government has proposed two measures that could see a reduction in oil and gas production, the provincial government is taking one step forward to try to attract more investment in the province’s resource sector. On Feb. 26, Reiter is heading to Houston for a conference seeking to attract investment to this province.

Frontier Centre for Public Policy: Feds aim to destroy Alberta
David Leis and Lee Harding discuss how the feds are aiming to destroy Alberta, and whole lot more. You could probably substitute “Saskatchewan” for “Alberta” and the meaning would be the same.
Discussion Paper: A Call for a New Saskatchewan Heritage Fund?
On Feb. 21, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith addressed her province, saying that her government would be essentially going all-in on revitalizing that province’s sovereign wealth fund, and using it, as Norway has, to level off the roller coaster of resource royalties. Perhaps ironically, Norway’s massive sovereign wealth fund was originally modelled on Alberta’s. And that fund is now worth US$1.42 trillion dollars (with a “t”).
So what about Saskatchewan?
Danielle Smith goes all-in on revitalized sovereign wealth fund
The evening of Feb. 21, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith released a video warning that the upcoming budget will have to deal with lower oil prices. As a result of seeking to get off the resource roller coaster, Smith says Alberta is going all-in on revitalizing its sovereign wealth fund, the Alberta Heritage Fund.
