Little action notwithstanding, Saskatchewan polling shows very similar values and resentment – hardly a surprise given the similar history and culture of both provinces. Early action to join Alberta would be likely.

The list of countries and empires that have broken up over that past several hundred years is not a short one. Sudan split into two countries by referendum in 2011. Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Egypt and Syria and many others. The Soviet Union, the British Empire are gone, the United States came close in 1861, and there is no promise that the republic will endure forever. Will Canada, or the world map look the same in 50 to 100 years? I’m betting not, and it seems pretty arrogant to think otherwise.

But no say by Westerners concerning such important matters. Westerners are third-string citizens in a country that refuses to adopt full democracy, enabling periodic attacks on the West for political gain, money, and/or the imposition of ideological values.

So why pick Codette Lake or Tobin Lake to situate a large nuclear power plant complex? Unlike Lake Diefenbaker, which is on the South Saskatchewan branch only, and whose levels depend on glacier melts now in question as climate change advances, the two big SaskPower hydro dams are fed by both the south and north branches of the river.

Three months have gone by since Danielle Smith and Mark Carney signed the pipeline MOU. The elapsed time has not shortened the list of skeptics who fail to see how the document can possibly result in construction of a new oil pipeline to the West coast.
