David Yager: Confusing signals from Ottawa on oil and gas
It’s hard to understand how reducing Canadian output would move the needle on world supply or emissions Liberal climate policies and the future of Alberta’s oil and gas industry are again headline news thanks to recent remarks by Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and...
Brian Zinchuk: It’s about damned time Canada bought the F-35. On Monday, we finally did
Despite Trudeau’s mucking around with the procurement of these fighters for political show, he did allow his government to actually make the right choice – and one that was clearly not the one he would have initially picked. Eating that crow shows a certain level of maturity that most in Western Canada would not have expected from him, given his behaviour on pipelines and other items of national importance.
Brian Crossman: Time to pull out the Magic Eight Ball and make some 2023 predictions
What will happen over the next twelve months? How does one prepare for events yet to transpire? Luckily for ya’ll, I will once again attempt to predict what going to happen in 2023. I tried this last year, with, uh mixed results. So once again, with the help of the “Fantasmical Prognostication Machine” AKA, my management decision making device AKA, my “Magic Eight Ball TM” we shall give it a whirl.
Brian Crossman: How the Grinch tried to steal the oilpatch
He flew in his plane, so high in the air, burning jet fuel, he had not a care. With Steve on his lap he looked down below, he could see rig activity. It was not slow.
“What are they doing?” He said in a huff, “They are still working, producing that stuff!” The rigs were still drilling, turning to the right. They drilled through the day, and all through the night. The Grinch looked at Steve and said, “They are still successful, in spite of my meddling; they ignored my efforts, and did not buy what I was pedaling.”
Ken From: The “energy transition” is discussed without much thought. This recently retired CEO of SaskEnergy thinks about it a lot
Ken From recently retired as SaskEnergy president and CEO. In his introductory column on Pipeline Online, he writes, “We have thrown out the phrase “energy transition” almost automatically and without much thought in the past year. By definition the word “transition” means to go from one state to another clearly defined state. That simple phrase and the way it is portrayed at large, I would argue, causes confusion as it implies the pathway to success has been picked – electrify everything – as opposed to continue to de-carbonize our energy systems.
“I would suggest that a more accurate depiction of our global goals would be the continued evolution of energy systems such that we develop multiple pathways to reduce emissions, taking into account sectoral differences such as transportation, buildings and heavy industry.”
