Canada will take a ‘hard long look’ at UN call to speed emissions reduction: minister

Canada has set at least eight different emissions targets since 1988, and has failed to meet any of them to date. Its next target in 2030 hinges heavily on being able to ratchet down emissions from the oil and gas sector.

That 2030 target currently is to cut emissions so they are between 55 and 60 per cent of what they were in 2005. Based on emissions levels in 2020, meeting the 2030 goal would mean cutting about 23 million tonnes of emissions a year, on average. That’s the equivalent of taking five million passenger cars off the road every 12 months until the end of the decade.

Alberta moves to force oilpatch to pay owed taxes above ‘threshold’ amount

The Alberta government is taking steps to force oilpatch companies to make good on their unpaid municipal taxes, including sending reminders from provincial cabinet ministers to those in arrears.
On Monday, Guthrie said he’s issued an order that blocks companies from acquiring or transferring licences on wells or other assets if their unpaid taxes exceed a threshold amount. That threshold is yet to be determined and is to be set by the Alberta Energy Regulator and Alberta Municipal Affairs.

The Saskatchewan First Act has passed. Now what? We ask the minister behind the bill

The Saskatchewan Party government passed The Saskatchewan First Act on March 16. Its stated intentions are to re-assert provincial jurisdiction on resources, greenhouse gas emissions on power production, and fertilizer usage for farmers.
Justice Minister and Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre was the minister charged with shepherding the bill through the legislature. Pipeline Online spoke to her on March 17, posing the fundamental question: What will you do next?
