NDP Finance Critic Trent Wotherspoon on Nov. 26, calling for an emergency motion on the gasoline tax. Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan
The NDP introduced an emergency motion to lift the provincial gasoline tax on Nov. 26, and it ran out of gas.
NDP Finance Critic Trent Wotherspoon introduced the motions “of urgent and pressing necessity.”
It was the NDP’s first action on the first full day of business for the abbreviated two-week fall session which started Monday, Nov. 25.
He said, “This is an important motion that I hope we can all be united on and support to deliver cost-of-living relief to people at a time when so many are just getting by. It reads: That this Assembly calls on the government to immediately suspend the collection of the provincial fuel tax from gasoline and diesel for a period of six months in order to help families struggling with the high cost of living.”
However, as there was notice of motion, the house voted down leave to debate the motion. “Leave has not been granted. Next order of business,” said Speaker Todd Goudy.

In a press release the same day, the NDP said:
“The price at the pump for the morning commute tomorrow was one vote away from being 15 cents cheaper.
“But it will remain the highest in the Prairies after the Sask. Party today blocked the Saskatchewan NDP’s emergency motion to suspend the provincial gas tax and give drivers some much-needed relief.
“For all their talk about change, this is the same old Sask. Party,” said Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck. “They’re out of touch with what hardworking families are going through and it shows in this vote.
“Hardworking people who have never struggled before are cutting back on the essentials. They can’t wait until tax season next year to find out if they’ll even benefit from the government’s programs.
“Gassing up the truck to get the kids to activities or drive into town isn’t a luxury, like the Sask. Party’s million-dollar trip to Dubai,” Beck added.
Pausing the gas tax in time for the holiday season would have saved families hundreds of dollars over the next six months.
Other provinces like Manitoba, Alberta, Newfoundland, and Ontario have already offered some form of gas-tax relief.
The Sask. Party has no plan to provide Saskatchewan people any cost-of-living relief until tax season next year, if at all.
