Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe speaks as he arrives for a first ministers meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Justin TangSaskatchewan reaction to President Donald Trump’s call for a restart of the Keystone XL Pipeline project has been mixed on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with Premier Scott Moe welcoming it and the NDP saying not so fast. And in Alberta, the response was positive as well.

Trump said on his own social media platform, Truth Social, “Our Country’s doing really well, and today, I was just thinking, that the company building the Keystone XL Pipeline that was viciously jettisoned by the incompetent Biden Administration should come back to America, and get it built — NOW! I know they were treated very badly by Sleepy Joe Biden, but the Trump Administration is very different — Easy approvals, almost immediate start! If not them, perhaps another Pipeline Company. We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!”

In a post on various social media, Moe reposted Trump’s initial Truth Social post. Moe added, “The path to continental energy dominance is to increase non-tariff North American trade. This includes the construction of new pipelines like Keystone XL.”

In a press release, NDP Energy and Resource Critic Sally Housser said, “Talking about sending our valuable Canadian oil to the US while President Trump continues to threaten tariffs and our very sovereignty every day is not leadership.

“If Donald Trump wants more Canadian energy, he needs to immediately scrap the devastating tariffs planned for next week. That’s the message that Scott Moe needs to be delivering to Washington.

“The last two months have shown that our closest ally and biggest trading partner is not reliable now. As we said last week, we to focus on diversifying our markets by building a pipeline to the East Coast. We can’t keep putting all our eggs in one basket.

“We’ve supported KXL for a long time, but industry needs stability. How do you restart this project with the very real risk of a 25 per cent tariff from the US?

“We have to be focused on our economic future and our energy security for years to come by finding new markets and reliable allies. Canada is first and we will never be the 51st state.”

Alberta response

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s province has, or at least had, the most at stake with the defunct pipeline project. Under previous Premier Jason Kenney the province paid for the installation of its portion of the pipeline, within Alberta. That was the only portion of consequence completed, from Hardisty to Empress, with two pumping stations along the way.

Smith said in a post on X, “Agreed, President Trump @realDonaldTrump. That project should have never been cancelled. Lower fuel costs for American families is a big win. Let’s also scrap these inflationary tariff ideas and focus on getting shovels in the ground right away!”
