The sound meter registered 45 decibels, 284 metres from the closest wind turbine. Photo by Brian Zinchuk
Pipeline Online had a few minutes to visit some wind turbines south of Morse on Oct. 13 and measure the sound coming from one of them. It was unclear if this was part of the Morse Wind Facility or Blue Hill Wind Facilty.
Both are owned by LS Power, an independent power producer which sells its power to SaskPower. The facilities are close to each other.
There was limited time and limited access, so there wasn’t time or capacity to do an in-depth testing regimen. The conditions were blue sky, temperature around 6 C, winds around 5-9 knots according to Windy.com. This was filmed 315 metres from the turbine according to the laser rangefinder, and yes, it was upwind of the turbine, as that’s what time and conditions allowed.
When the decibel meter was masked to preclude interference from the wind, it was routinely showing 45-47 decibels when pointed at the turbine. Approaching traffic that was several hundred meters away (the highway was about 100 metres away) typically registered 70 decibels. While the sound from the turbine was quiet, it was consistent. On the other hand, any traffic along either the grid road or highway proved to be substantially louder than the turbines in this situation.
Here’s the video showing it live:
