Lightning struck a Pemoco Ltd. oilfield battery approximately 7 miles north and three miles east of Stoughton in the early afternoon of Monday, June 26.
Thunderstorms passed through the region, dumping rain and apparently, some high voltage. Lightning struck the 5-31-9-7-W2 battery.

Such occurrences are rather common in the southeast Saskatchewan oilfield, with one or two batteries per year being hit and lit afire in any given year. But there are some years with no strikes. Curiously, those fires tend to be in the Stoughton area.
In this case, there was no one present at the site at the time, and no injuries occurred. There was no well onsite and Pemoco staff isolated the facility from all incoming flowlines to staunch the flow of new product. Product already onsite was what was burning into the evening, when Pipeline Online was able to approach the gate and take some photos and video. The intention was to allow the fire to burn itself out.
The thick, black smoke plume stays relatively low in the sky and extended many miles to the northeast. It was easily visible more than 20 miles away.
